USAO prevails over OCU

Third-ranked Stars take first losses of 2020 to second-ranked USAO

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University took its first losses of the season 3-0 and 9-5 to USAO on Tuesday at Ann Lacy Stadium in a battle of teams ranked in the top five in NAIA softball.
Brooklyn Mason had a two-run double in the second game to highlight the Stars' offensive performance. Third-ranked OCU went to 7-2, 0-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while No. 2-ranked USAO improved to 6-2, 2-0 in the SAC.
In the second game, the Stars erupted for five runs in the second inning. Mallory McCoy put OCU on the scoreboard with an RBI base hit to right field. Taylor Pike reached home plate on an error.
Mason pounded a double over the center fielder's head to drive in two runs and cut OCU's deficit to 6-4. Sarah Fisher smacked an RBI single to right to slice the USAO lead to 6-5.
The Stars' Jaden Shores struck out a season-high 12 batters in her third complete-game effort of the year. Shores, a senior from Blanchard, Okla., reached double figures in strikeouts for the fifth time in her career and extended her streak of innings without giving up an earned run to 23.1 innings. Shores took the loss, moving to 4-1 on the year.
McCoy, a freshman from Mustang, Okla., went 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Kelsie Delap, a freshman from Allen, Texas, added a double. Kennedy Jackson swiped two bases for OCU.
In the first game, Christie Betker had her season-long outing with seven innings while matching her season high with seven strikeouts.
USAO's Emily Cerny outdueled Betker. Cerny fanned eight while limiting OCU to three hits. The Stars had not been shut out since Cerny and USAO performed the feat April 19, 2019 1-0 at Ann Lacy Stadium.
Jackson, a junior from Moore, Okla., lofted a double over the left fielder for OCU's first hit of the game leading off the fourth. Kaitlyn Jones, a freshman from Edmond, Okla., and Mason, a sophomore from Lone Grove, Okla., each added hits for the Stars.
OCU plays next in the Central Baptist February Meltdown in Conway, Ark., on Friday. The Stars take on Central Methodist (Mo.) at 1 p.m., then Saint Mary (Kan.) at 3 p.m., and Baker (Kan.) at 5 p.m.
