Stars collide with USAO on Tuesday

No. 3-ranked OCU goes toe-to-toe with second-rated USAO

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University squares off with USAO in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday at Ann Lacy Stadium in a clash of teams ranked in the top five in NAIA softball.
USAO took the Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season championship last season, while Oklahoma City toppled the Drovers for the SAC Tournament title. Both teams made the NAIA Softball World Series with the Stars prevailing over USAO 3-1 on the way to a national runner-up finish.
The third-ranked Stars own a 7-0 record this year. Sarah Fisher, a junior from Vista, Calif., and Kaitlyn Jones, a freshman from Edmond, Okla., top OCU with a .565 batting average. Fisher has driven in a team-best 10 runs, while Jones has scored a team-high 11 runs.
Jaden Shores, a senior from Blanchard, Okla., spearheads the Stars' pitching with a 4-0 record, 0.00 earned run average and 21 strikeouts in 22.1 innings. OCU owns each SAC player of the week accolade this year with Shores taking two hurler of the week nods. Jones and Mallory McCoy, a freshman from Mustang, Okla., have been SAC player of the week honorees.
Oklahoma City ranks third in the NAIA with 10.0 runs per game, 4.0 stolen bases per game and 4.14 steal attempts per game as well as fourth in steals (28) and runs batted in a game (8.14). OCU comes off a doubleheader sweep of 23rd-ranked Houston-Victoria on Friday in Waco, Texas.
The Stars' Phil McSpadden has forged a 1,734-384 record in his 33rd year as coach. McSpadden tops college softball in wins against four-year competition. He has led OCU to 10 national championships and five national runner-up finishes.  
Second-ranked USAO (4-2) ranks fifth with 1.17 homers per game. Kristen Prieto leads the team with three homers and six RBIs. Emily Cerny has hit .455 with a homer and four RBIs, while Falon Howell has gone 2-0 with a 1.66 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 12.2 innings. The Drovers won the 2018 national title.
