Post Play Keys Rout of Texas Wesleyan

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City University women's basketball team has one of the best front court combinations in the NAIA, and on Thursday night, the strength of the Stars in the post was on full display.

Abby Selzer, Brennyn Seagler, and Taylor Sylvester proved a three-headed monster that could not be contained as OCU (12-0, 5-0 SAC) took command early and never relinquished control, battering the Texas Wesleyan University Lady Rams (8-4, 3-2 SAC) 83-66 to extend their season-opening winning streak to 12 games..

Sylvester and Mallory Lockhart combined on a 10-0 run for the Stars to open the flood gates from the opening tip. Lockhart buried a pair of 3-pointers, and Sylvester added a couple of made baskets of her own, forcing Texas Wesleyan into a timeout with less than three minutes elapsed in the game. During the run, OCU was 4-for-5 from the field, and Texas Wesleyan missed its first six attempts from the floor.

While the timeout did serve to slow the Stars briefly on the offensive end, Texas Wesleyan was unable to get anything to fall on their end of the floor. Seager, Selzer, and NaShyla Hammons helped OCU put together another 9-0 spurt, bringing the total run to 19-2 to open the game, and after the first quarter, OCU led 21-6.

During the 19-2 game opening run, OCU was 7-for-10 from the floor, while Texas Wesleyan was just 1-for-11 shooting the basketball.

The second quarter was all about the Stars running high-low post action. OCU scored routinely in the period by entering the ball into the high post and manuvering a pass to the low block for buckets. Seagler and Selzer shone particularly brightly in the quarter, and Sylvester took advantage of such a play in the waning seconds of the half to earn a pair of free throws which she cashed in to give OCU the 43-21 halftime lead.

As Texas Wesleyan adjusted in the second half to try and slow down the Stars in the paint, OCU shifted their approach and Mallory Lockhart began to make her presence felt. Lockhart scored 11 points in the second half, reaching the 20-point plateau for the fifth time this season, while Selzer continued to dominate in the paint. OCU kept the Lady Rams at bay in the third quarter, stretching their lead to 62-39 after 30 minutes of action, and while Texas Wesleyan did make a run in the fourth frame, OCU managed to hold them off and take the 83-66 win.

Selzer led the way with 22 points on 9-for-11 shooting in the game. She was also 4-for-6 from the free throw line, and she grabbed five rebounds as well. Lockhart's 20 points included a 5-for-9 performance from long distance, and Seagler also reached double-figures with 16 points and five rebounds, and she was 7-for-8 from the foul line. Sylvester led the way with seven rebounds for OCU.

OCU cashed in 23 of 46 field goal attempts (50%) from the floor, seven of 17 (41.2%) from long distance, and 30 of 39 foul shots (76.9%) in the game.

The Stars will hit the road on Saturday and head south to Waxahachie, Texas to do battle with the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Lady Lions (7-5, 2-3 SAC). The game is slated to tip-off at 5 p.m.
