Lockhart's Hot Shooting Lifts Women's Basketball to Road win at SAGU

Coach Bo Overton Wins 150th as OCU Pulls Away in Second Half

WAXAHACHIE, Texas - Mallory Lockhart played 36 minutes for the Oklahoma City University women's basketball team on Saturday evening at Southwestern Assemblies of God University, and she helped spur the Stars to their 13th consecutive win to open the season.

Lockhart was 7-for-8 from the floor, and 4-for-5 from long range, and she tied for the team lead with 19 points in the game, as OCU (13-0, 6-0 SAC) pulled away from SAGU (7-6, 2-4 SAC) in the second half to take the 85-70 win on the road.

The first quarter was tight throughout the period. SAGU led for much of the frame, but the margin was a single possession for all but 58 seconds in the opening stanza. Twice, SAGU led by four, but Lockhart and Abby Selzer combined for the final 10 OCU points in the quarter, including a 3-point shot from Lockhart with nine seconds to play in the opening quarter that gave OCU a 22-21 lead after 10 minutes of play.

Selzer opened the second frame on a personal 6-0 run, scoring the only points for either team in the first 1:16 of the period as OCU built a 28-21 lead with 8:44 to play. The OCU run eventually reached 12-3 when Selzer scored with 6:37 to go in the half to give OCU a 33-24 lead. OCU pushed their lead to double figures at 37-27 with 1:59 left in the quarter on a bucket from Brennyn Seagler, but SAGU closed the margin to 40-34 at the intermission with a 7-3 spurt to end the half.

A traditional 3-point play from Lockhart early in the third quarter restored a nine point OCU lead, but through the middle stages of the third period, the game remained close. SAGU was unable to close the gap below six, but they kept the Stars from opening the lead back into double digits until Lockhart connected from deep with 1:49 to go and put the Stars up 60-50. That shot came during an 11-4 run over the final 3:22 of the quarter and OCU carried a 66-52 lead into the final 10 minutes.

OCU opened the final period on a 7-0 run that helped put the game out of reach. The spurt started with a pair of free throws from Selzer, and it culminated on a basket from Payton Taylor just 1:39 into the final quarter that pushed OCU's lead to 73-52. SAGU managed one final push, using a 14-4 run over a span of 4:42 in the middle of the quarter to close the gap to 79-68, but an 8-0 OCU run put the game away, and the Stars took the win, 85-70.

Lockhart and Selzer each had 19 points to lead the Stars offensively. Shamika Smith added 11 points, Seagler scored nine points and had a team-leading six assists, Taylor led OCU with six rebounds and tallied nine markers, while Taylor Sylvester and Erika Ankeny added eight points apiece. Sylvester also blocked two shots, and Ankeny picked up four steals.

OCU made 32 of 62 shots from the floor (51.6%), five of nine (55.6%) from long distance, and 16 of 18 (88.9%) charity tosses in the game. OCU dominated the game off the bench, outscoring the Lady Lions of SAGU 32-10 beyond the starting five, and the Stars also held comfortable advantages off turnovers (23-7) and in the paint (46-14).

The win was the 150th for head coach Bo Overton in his head coaching career., amassed in his time on the OCU bench, as well as at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (2004-06). Overton has a winning percentage of .848 in his fifth season on the Stars' bench, and he has led the Stars to three straight SAC regular season titles, two SAC Tournament Championships, a pair of trips to the NAIA Championship title game, and one NAIA Division I National Championship title (2017).

The Stars will return home to open a three game week on Tuesday night when they host the Southwestern Christian University Lady Eagles (10-3, 3-3 SAC). The game is slated to tip-off at Abe Lemons Arena at 6 p.m.
