Texas Wesleyan holds off Stars 83-80

OCU goes to 0-2 against ranked competition this season

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University fell short to Texas Wesleyan 83-80 on Thursday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
A.J. Cockrell, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., fueled the Stars' effort with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Oklahoma City dropped to 8-5, 2-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while Texas Wesleyan, ranked 22nd in NAIA Division I men's basketball, improved to 11-3, 4-1 in the SAC.
Texas Wesleyan assumed the lead with a crucial 11-2 run. The Rams led 72-67 after Akeem White's bucket with 4:42 to go. Texas Wesleyan took the lead 66-65 on LaMont Simmons' layup at the 6:38 mark.
Anthony Davis gave OCU its largest advantage of the night 46-37 with a 3-pointer early in the second half. The Stars equaled that margin as Kealon Clayborne nailed a trey for a 64-55 cushion with 9:32 remaining.
The Stars sank 57.1 percent from the field and held Texas Wesleyan to 39.5 percent shooting from the floor in the first period as Oklahoma City led 43-37 at halftime. OCU connected on 11-for-22 from 3-point range for the contest.
Cockrell came up with his second double-double of the season. Trae Bryant, a senior from Wilmington, N.C., delivered 17 points, four rebounds and three assists as well as 4-for-6 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc.
Clayborne, a junior from Cedar Hill, Texas, supplied the Stars with 12 points and two assists. Darrion Willies, a senior from Fontana, Calif., hauled in 11 rebounds to tie for game-high honors in that category. Rashaun Coleman, a junior from Houston, dished out a game-high six assists for OCU.
The Stars face Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) at 6:45 p.m. Saturday in Waxahachie, Texas.
