Women's Basketball Tames the Tigers in Win over CCCK

OKLAHOMA CITY - A fast start on Saturday afternoon helped the Oklahoma City University women's basketball team extend their winning streak to 11 to open the season, as the Stars (11-0, 4-0 SAC) cruised to a 75-59 win over Central Christian College of Kansas (3-8, 0-4 SAC)

The Stars jumped ahead early on some very efficient shooting in the opening quarter. OCU made their first six shots in the game, and in the first quarter, the Stars connected at an 83.3% clip from the floor (10-for-12) as they used runs of 7-0 and 10-1 to open a 16-point lead in the first 10 minutes. OCU held Central Christian to only 2-for-16 (12.5%) from the field in the opening quarter, and as the game headed to the second stanza OCU held a 23-7 lead.

Back-to-back baskets from Brennyn Seagler and Payton Taylor to open the second quarter helped the Stars quickly stretch their lead to 20 points, and moments later, a Mallory Lockhart 3-pointer pushed the lead to 33-9. Shamika Smart scored with 3:37 left in the frame to push the lead to 26, and the Stars carried a comfortable 47-22 lead into the locker room at the half.

A 7-0 OCU run to open the second half gave the Stars all the breathing room they needed to coast home with the win. The lead reached as many as 33 points, OCU led 61-37 after the third quarter, and though Central Christian battled back to whittle the margin down to 16 in the fourth, the Stars cruised home with the 75-59 victory.

Smith led all scorers with 15 points in the game, she was 7-for-8 shooting from the floor, and she dished up a game high eight assists while also grabbing five rebounds. Abby Selzer added 13 points and seven boards, and NaShyla Hammons grabbed a team leading nine rebounds. Seagler, Lockhart, and Taylor each chipped in nine points as well.

After the red-hot start from the floor, the Stars posted an outstanding shooting afternoon. OCU made 30 of 56 shots from the field (53.6%), 7 of 17 (41.2%) from long distance, and 8 of 11 (72.7%) from the foul line. OCU held a 43-33 edge on the glass, and they had five blocked shots - led by Taylor Sylvester's three rejections.

OCU will be back at home on Thursday evening to take on the Texas Wesleyan University Rams (8-3 (3-1 SAC) at 6 p.m. at Abe Lemons Arena.
