Women's Hoops Outlasts Langston in 2020 Opener

LANGSTON, Okla. - After a sluggish start to the game, the Oklahoma City University women's basketball team recovered to start the new year off on the right foot on Thursday night at Langston University.

OCU (10-0, 3-0 SAC) used a 23-8 edge in the third quarter to pull away from the Lady Lions (1-5, 0-3 SAC), and OCU held on late for the 69-55 win.

"Any time you can go on the road coming out of a break and get a win over a team like Langston, that's a good thing." remarked head coach Bo Overton after the game. "I thought we had a pair of really good quarters, and a couple of quarters that will give us some opportunities to learn, but overall, it's always good to start with a win."

The Stars started slowly in the game, and Langston took advantage. The Lady Lions opened the night on a 7-0 run before Payton Taylor got OCU on the board with a 3-pointer at the 7:12 mark of the first quarter. Taylor scored again with 3:56 to play to cut the OCU deficit to 7-5, and after a Mallory Lockhart triple, Abby Selzer gave OCU a 10-9 lead with 1:32 to go. The Lady Lions, though answered with the final five points of the frame, including a buzzer-beating deuce from Grace Williams to give Langston a 14-10 lead after one period of play.

In the second quarter, Langston struck first to restore the seven point margin at 17-10, but OCU responded and took control of the game. The Stars held Langston off the board for the next 5:50 of the quarter, and the Stars shined bright on the offensive end of the floor. OCU made five of their next nine shots and added a pair of made free throws as a part of a 14-0 run that gave OCU a 24-17 lead with 6:50 to play in the half.

In the closing moments of the half, Selzer took center stage. The sophomore from Thomas Oklahoma scored the final 10 OCU points of the first half as she scored on five straight trips, and OCU took a 34-24 lead into the halftime break.

The third quarter helped OCU salt the game away as they held Langston to 1-of-11 shooting in the third stanza. Mallory Lockhart and NaShyla Hammons combined for 13 of OCU's 23 points in the quarter, and OCU's lead reached as many as 25 points in the frame, and after three quarters of play, OCU held the 57-32  lead.

Langston put together one final charge in the fourth frame, opening the period on an 18-5 run to pull to within a dozen, but the Stars stopped the run and held on to take the 69-55 win.

Selzer led all scorers with 21 points in the game on 9-of-11 shooting in only 17 minutes of action. Lockhart poured in 19 tallies, and Taylor added 10 along with a team-best nine rebounds. Lockhart, Shamika Smith, and Erika Ankeny each dished out three assists in the win.

As a team, OCU made 23-of-59 (39%) shots from the floor, and 5-of-19 (26.3%) from long range. The Stars were very good from the charity stripe too, making 18-of-21 (85.7%) attempts. The Stars dominated the battle of the benches as well, out-scoring the reserves of Langston 34-7.

The Stars will open their 2020 home slate when they host the Central Christian College of Kansas Lady Tigers (1-5, 0-3 SAC) at Abe Lemons Arena at 2 p.m.
