Women's Basketball Clips JBU to Earn 16th Straight Win

Stars Extend Streak to 13 over JBU

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. - The recent history of the series between Oklahoma City University and John Brown University in women's basketball has been rather one-sided. The Stars entered play having won 12 in a row over JBU, and on Saturday afternoon, after a sluggish start, OCU extended that winning streak.

OCU (16-0, 8-0 SAC) held JBU (5-12, 1-7 SAC) to only 10 points in the second quarter, and the Stars inched their way out to a 15-point win, 76-61.

"It was a really good win on the road against a team that played really well," opined head coach Bo Overton after the game. "We were able to overcome their good 3-point shooting by executing well on offense, and I thought our presence in the paint and the ability to get to the foul line and make free throws were the difference in the game."

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair throughout. There were four ties and 10 lead changes in the first 10 minutes, and neither team held a two possession lead in the frame. OCU drew first blood on a basket from Payton Taylor, and Erika Ankney, Brennyn Seagler and Mallory Lockhart all scored in the opening moments of the game, but OCU trailed 9-8 with 4:09 to play. OCU then turned to Abby Selzer. Selzer scored OCU's next eight points, and Shamika Smith finished the quarter with a bucket in the final minute, but JBU's Jessica Goldman hit the Golden Eagles' fourth 3-pointer of the quarter to tie the score at 18 with the first frame in the books.

JBU took a 22-18 lead early in the second frame, but OCU answered with an 8-0 run that included triples from Ankney and Lockhart to take a 26-22 lead with 5:05 remaining in the opening half. JBU cut the OCU lead to 28-27 with 3:09 left on the clock, but another 8-0 run from the Stars pushed the lead to 36-27 on another Lockhart 3-pointer just over a minute later, and at the break, OCU led 36-28.

JBU struck first in the third quarter, but the Stars scored the next six points and pushed their lead to 42-31 midway through the quarter. After another JBU 3-pointer, OCU rattled off nine points in a row, including a 3-point play from Smith with 3:09 left that gave OCU a 17-point lead. JBU rallied with an 11-3 spurt to trim the OCU lead to nine, but Lockhart scored with 10 seconds to play in the frame, and after three quarters, OCU led 58-47.

The Golden Eagles opened the final period with a 5-1 spurt that pulled JBU within seven with 7:42 to play, but OCU answered with a 7-0 run to double their lead to 66-52 with 5:56 to go in the game. OCU pushed their lead to as many as 18 points in the final moments of the game, and when the horn sounded, OCU claimed the 76-61 win.

Selzer led all scorers in the game with 23 points, and she added eight rebounds in another outstanding performance. She finished the week with an average of 21.7 points per game in the three contests during the week, and she added 6.3 rebounds per game as well while shooting 75% (24-for-32). On Saturday, Selzer was a perfect 8-for-8 from the floor and 7-for-10 from the charity stripe.

Lockhart scored 16 points in the game, and Smith (11), and Ankney (10) also reached double figures. Seagler led the Stars with nine rebounds, and Taylor Sylvester rejected four shots in the contest.

OCU made 27 of 58 (46.6%) in the game, though they made only five of 20 (25%) from long distance. One of the differences in the game, however, came at the foul line, where OCU was 17-for-21 (81%), while JBU was only 5-for-9 (55.6%). OCU out-scored JBU in the paint 55-20, and they turned 22 JBU turnovers into 21 points while only turning the ball over nine times themselves in the game.

OCU will return to Oklahoma, and they will be on the road again for their next game on Thursday. The Stars will head south to nearby Chickasha, Okla. to take on the Drovers of the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma (11-5, 6-2 SAC) on January 23 at 6 p.m.
