Women's Basketball Grinds out 82-74 win at USAO

OCU Holds Off Late Surge from Drovers to Equal 2010-11 Start of 17-0

CHICKASHA, Okla. - When you're on the road in the Sooner Athletic Conference, any win on the road is a good one, regardless of the margin. On Thursday night, that was the case for the NAIA No. 2 Oklahoma City Stars, who had to sweat out a close game at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.

OCU (17-0, 9-0 SAC) held USAO (11-6, 6-3 SAC) to just 2-for-14 from 3-point range in the first and third quarters, but USAO was able to hang close in the game by grabbing 15 offensive rebounds that led to 14 second chance points. The Drovers cut the lead to three on several occasions late, but OCU held the lead wire to wire, taking the win 82-74.

Starting in place on Payton Taylor, NaShyla Hammons made her impact felt from the opeining tip-off. Hammons scored OCU's first five points as the Stars grabbed the early lead. Hammons finished the opening quarter with those five points, but she added four rebounds - two of them on the offensive end of the court - and an assist as OCU controlled the opening 10 minutes and took a 21-10 lead into the second frame.

OCU quickly stretched their lead to a dozen early in the second frame, but USAO began to get second chance opportunities and Tori James helped them whittle away at the deficit. The Stars held the Drovers without an offensive rebound in the opening period, but USAO was able to corral three second chance opportunities in the second frame, and they also began to heat up from beyond the arc. USAO made four 3-pointers in the second stanza, three of those coming off the fingers of James, and USAO clawed their way back to within three at 32-29 with four minutes to play. OCU pushed the lead back to five, but twice more in the waning moments of the half, the Drovers pulled within a possession, and at the break, OCU led by a slim 38-33 margin.

After an early basket from USAO cut the margin to 38-35, OCU put together a 10-2 run, capped by a Brennyn Seagler 3-pointer, to claim an 11-point advantage at 48-37 with 5:56 to play. Abby Selzer scored inside at the 4:40 mark of the period to give OCU a 52-39 lead, and a triple from Shamika Smith with under a minute to go gave OCU their largest lead to that point in the game - 58-44 - and at the end of three quarters, OCU led 58-46.

A Mallory Lockhart 3-point bomb just 1:29 into the final frame gave OCU a 63-48 lead, and moments later Erika Ankney connected from deep to put OCU on top by 17. USAO mounted one final rally, slowly chipping away at the margin over the final seven minutes. The Drovers closed to within 10 with 3:16 to play, and again with 2:37 left. USAO got three straight buckets from Khady Sene to pull within six, but that was as close as they got. Taylor Sylvester, Lockhart, and Ankney each cashed in two points in the final 1:03 as OCU held on for the 82-74 win.

Seagler and Selzer each had double-doubles. Seagler scored 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting, and she reeled in 11 boards, while Selzer cashed in 15 tallies, and notched 10 rebounds. Seagler assed a pair of assists and two blocked shots as well. Ankney added 15 markers, and Lockhart added 13; while Ankney and Sylvester each dished out four assists in the win.

As a team, OCU was 30 for 66 (45.5%) from the floor, 8-for-21 (38.1%) from deep, and 14-for-18 (77.8%) from the foul line. OCU won the battle of the boards 41-37 as well.

The Stars will return home on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip-off against Mid-America Christian University (14-4, 7-2 SAC). The game will wrap up the first half of the double round robin SAC schedule, and will be inside Abe Lemons Arena.
