Men's Hoops Pushes No. 10 JBU to OT Before Falling on the Road

Stars Overcome Foul Trouble to Force Extra Session

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. - Going on the road in the Sooner Athletic Conference is always a challenge. Oklahoma City University headed to Bill George Arena at John Brown University to face the JBU Golden Eagles - currently ranked 10th in the NAIA coaches' top-25 poll. The Stars played well in the difficult environment, forcing the game beyond the scheduled 40 minutes, but the Stars were saddled with foul trouble from three starters, and in the end, that proved costly.

OCU (10-7, 3-5 SAC) got a 23-point effort from Rashaun Coleman, but three starters fouled out of the game in the final 10 minutes of regulation and overtime, and JBU (16-2, 7-1 SAC) held off the Stars for the 92-86 overtime win.

"I'm really proud of our group," said head coach Hank Aldous after the game. "They battled all the way through, and stuck with the game plan. They trusted it, and we had a chance to win it in regulation that just came up short. In overtime, they got off to a hot start, and we lost a little bit of focus, but ultimately that was just a great game."

Rashaun Coleman and Trae Bryant each connected from deep early in the game, and OCU built a 9-5 lead in the opening five minutes of play. JBU answered with a 12-2 run to grab the lead at 17-11  with 12:09 to play in the opening stanza, a 9-2 spurt from OCU saw the Stars reclaim the lead on a basket from Kealon Claybourne at the 8:34 mark of the first half. The game see-sawed back and forth throughout the remainder of the half, and at the intermission, the score was tied at 42.

Coleman and Darrion Willies scored quickly in the second half, but the Stars were unable to generate separation between themselves and the Golden Eagles, as JBU rallied to tie the game at 46. Another 6-point spurt from OCU gave the Stars their biggest lead of the game to that point, 52-46, on a basket from Coleman in the paint, but again JBU came back - this time with an 11-0 run to take a 57-52 advantage.

JBU pushed their lead to as many as seven points, but OCU would not go away quietly. The Stars pulled together and chipped away at the margin a little at a time. Troy Cagle hit a free throw to cut the deficit to 69-66 with 6:27 to play, Coleman buried a triple at the 4:44 mark to trim the deficit to 72-71, and with 3:39 to play, Anthony Davis took a feed from Coleman and scored to give OCU the 73-72 lead and cap off a 7-0 OCU run.

As the clock wound down, JBU inched in front, taking a 79-77 lead with 54 seconds to play, but Coleman attacked the rim seconds later, earning a trip to the foul line. The 6-0 junior from Houston cashed in two free throws with 43 seconds to play. The Stars forced a JBU turnover on the ensuing possession, giving OCU a chance to win the game in regulation. Coleman got a look at the bucket, but the shot went begging, and the game went to overtime, tied at 79.

In the extra session, JBU missed their first two shots, but a free throw just 34 seconds into play in overtime gave JBU a lead they would not relinquish. OCU missed all five shots from the floor in overtime, and JBU opened the extra period on a 7-0 run on their way to the 92-86 win.

Coleman led the Stars with 23 points in the game, and he played a key role for the Stars in the game, running the offense with Bryant in foul trouble. Coleman made seven of 10 shots from the floor, and he equaled that performance at the foul line, while also dishing out five assists. Anthony Davis added 17 points in the game, Willies tallied 11 points, and A.J. Cockrell added 10 points. Willies led the Stars with seven rebounds.

OCU did the bulk of their damage in the paint, racking up 61 points in the key, and their focus on scoring inside yielded 42 free throw attempts in the game. The Stars were 24-for-53 (45.3%) from the field, and they were 34-for-42 (81%) from the charity stripe. OCU did struggle from long range, making only four of 20 shots (20%) from beyond the arc.

The Stars will be on the road again on Thursday, January 23, when they head south to Chickasha, Okla. There, OCU will battle the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (7-10, 2-6 SAC), with tip-off slated for 7:45.
