Women's Hoops Blitzes Bacone; Stars now 15-0

OCU Cruises to Home Win over Former SAC Foe

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Bacone College Warriors left the Sooner Athletic Conference after the 2018-19 campaign, but they remained on the schedules of many SAC schools, including that of the Oklahoma City University women's basketball team. On Thursday night, the Stars welcomed Bacone to Abe Lemons Arena, and the Stars picked up their 11th straight win over the Warriors and 15th consecutive victory to open the season.
OCU (15-0) scored the first six points of the game, and 10 of the first 12, and they never looked back, as the Stars throttled Bacone (1-12) 95-36.
Mallory Lockhart opened the scoring just 20 seconds into the contest, and moments later Brennyn Seagler converted a traditional 3-point play to push OCU's lead to 6-0. Abby Selzer and Shamika Smith combined on a 7-0 run in the final minutes of the opening quarter to stretch the advantage to 17-5, and the period ended with OCU in front 20-8.
Erika Ankney scored the first bucket of the second frame on a fast break layup to stretch the OCU lead to 22-8, and midway through the stanza, NaShyla Hammons buried a 3-pointer to extend the Stars margin to 17 at 33-16. A pair of free throws from Selzer at the 1:45 mark pushed the lead beyond 20 points, and a buzzer beating steal and layup from Ankney gave OCU a 46-18 lead as the Stars closed the half on a 13-0 run that spanned more than four minutes.
Lockhart and Seagler combined for the first six points of the second half to extend the overall run to 19-0, and the rout was on. A layup from Selzer with 3:45 left in the third quarter pushed the lead to 61-20, and Hammons closed the quarter out with a 3-pointer that gave OCU a 70-23 lead with 10 minutes remaining. The OCU lead reached as many as 59 points in the final period, and Jaelyn Knight, Rylie Watson, Jordyn Eaton, and Riley Westervelt combined for the final 18 points for the Stars in the 95-36 win.
Selzer shined brightly again on offense. The 6-foot-2 sophomore from Thomas, Okla. equaled her career-high with 26 points in the game, and she grabbed and notched a pair of blocked shots. She made 10 of her 14 shots from the floor, and she was 6-for-7 from the foul line as well.
Mallory Lockhart added a dozen points, Ankney, Seagler, and Knight each scored nine points, and Knight grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds. Taylor Sylvester rejected five shots, and Smith notched five assists and four steals.
OCU was 37-for-73 (50.7%) from the floor, 10-for-26 (38.5%) from long distance, and 11-for-15 (73.3%) from the foul line. The Stars held a 46-29 lead on the glass, and they turned 25 Bacone turnovers into 28 points.
OCU will hit the road on Saturday to wrap up their three game week, heading to Siloam Springs, Ark. to battle the John Brown University Golden Eagles (5-11, 1-6 SAC). Tip-off at Bill George Arena is slated for 2 p.m.
