Women's Hoops Stifles SCU; Rolls to 14th Straight Win

OCU Posts Best Single-Game Defensive Effort in SAC to Defeat SCU

OKLAHOMA CITY - Playing the only game of the night in the Sooner Athletic Conference on Tuesday, the Oklahoma City University women's basketball team put on a defensive clinic as they hosted Southwestern Christian University.

The Stars (14-0, 7-0 SAC) matched their 14-0 start of 2011-12 with a 69-42 win over Southwestern Christian (10-4, 3-4 SAC), doing so on the strength of the best single-game effort in field goal percentage defense the SAC has seen this season. The Stars held SCU to a 14-for-62 mark from the floor, keeping the Lady Eagles to a field goal percentage of just 22.6 for the game. The mark is the second-best tally in that category for OCU this season, bettered only by a performance in the season opener when they held Texas A&M-Texarkana to 12-for-75 (16%) shooting. It marked the fifth time this season OCU has held an opponent below 30 percent from the field.

OCU started slowly on the offensive end, but the Stars held SCU to 1-for-11 shooting in the first quarter. With the defense keeping SCU in check, Erika Ankney ignited the Stars' offense with a 3-pointer at the 5:40 mark of the quarter, and that sparked a long OCU run. Brennyn Seagler, Abby Selzer, and Mallory Lockhart contributed points to what became a 13-0 OCU run, and at the end of one quarter, OCU led 15-4.

OCU methodically stretched the lead in the second frame. The Stars never scored more than five straight points in the quarter, but neither did they allow SCU to register consecutive scores. Selzer scored the first 10 points for OCU in the quarter, Lockhart pitched in a 3-pointer with 3:40 to go in the half, and Seagler added a jumper at the 3:13 mark to give OCU a 30-14 lead, which they took into the locker room.

With OCU leading 41-22 and just less than five minutes showing on the third quarter clock, the Stars put together another lengthy run. OCU scored 12 straight points, and SCU missed six straight shots and went more than five minutes without a point. The margin gave OCU a comfortable lead  - 56-26 entering the final 10 minutes of play, and OCU pushed their lead to as many as 36 points on their way to the 69-42 win.

Selzer was one of four OCU players to score in double figures, as she led the way with 16 points, Ankney chipped in 11, and Lockhart and Seagler each contributed 10 tallies. Taylor Sylvester had 10 rebounds and three blocked shots, Seagler had five rebounds and four assists, and Shamika Smith added seven points, four boards, and a team leading five helpers. Smith also had three steals.

OCU made 27 of 57 shots (47.4 %) from the floor, and the stars connected from long distance on seven of 19 attempts (36.8%). At the foul line, OCU was 8-for-11 (72.7%), and OCU dominated the game in the paint, outscoring SCU 28-14 in the three-second area. The Stars also held a 47-36 advantage on the glass, and they added 23 points off the bench, led by Selzer's 16.

OCU will step out of SAC play on Thursday night for a home contest against Bacone College (1-11). The Warriors are former members of the SAC, but they left the conference following the 2018-19 season to compete as independents. The game is slated to tip-off inside Abe Lemons Arena at 6 p.m.
