Stars stumble at Oklahoma Wesleyan 9-1

OCU gives up six first half goals in road loss

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University women's soccer dropped its second match of the season Monday night after a 9-1 loss on the road against Oklahoma Wesleyan.
The loss moved OCU to 3-2 overall, while Oklahoma Wesleyan, who was receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 poll, improved to 2-2.
Oklahoma Wesleyan got off to a hot start, scoring three goals in the first 20 minutes of play. Another three goals in the first half put the Eagles up 6-0 at the break. OKWU's Rayssa Neres Souza mustered four first half goals, collecting a hat trick within the first 32 minutes. The Stars struggled to muster any offense in the first half, producing only three shots after 45 minutes of play.
OCU saw the deficit grow to 7-0 in the 46th minute when Souza tallied her fifth goal of the match for OKWU. Marjolen Nekesa then added her second score in the 51st minute to extend the lead. Souza notched her sixth goal of the night and ninth total for Oklahoma Wesleyan in the 68th minute.
OCU forward Rachel Brantley put the Stars on the board in the 74th minute on a penalty kick, her second score of the season. The Stars finished the match with 12 total shots and one on goal. Rebekah Brantley, a senior from Broken Arrow, Okla., had three shots in Monday's match. Brantley is tied for second on the team in shots this season with 13. Annie Bragg and Kalen Castor each tallied two shots in the match.
Oklahoma City next takes on Bethany (Kan.) at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Brian Harvey Field.
