Stars strive for World Series bid in Opening Round

Third-ranked OCU faces Friends at 1 p.m. May 13

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University seeks to return to the NAIA Softball World Series in the NAIA Championship Opening Round Oklahoma City Bracket beginning Monday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
Third-ranked Oklahoma City, 16th-rated Olivet Nazarene (Ill.), No. 24 Morningside (Iowa) and Friends (Kan.) make up the tournament field. The championship game will be 11 a.m. May 15 with a 1 p.m. if-necessary game that day.
Olivet Nazarene squares off with Morningside at 11 a.m., and the Stars take on Friends at 1 p.m. Monday. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $7 for students 18 and under. The tournament games will be broadcast live with each contest costing $8.95 per game with a $19.95 tournament pass. OCU hosts an NAIA Championship Opening Round for the seventh year in a row.
The Stars' Jaci Smith has been one of the most productive softball players in the country. Smith, a senior catcher from Godley, Texas, owns NAIA single-season marks with 109 RBIs and 107 runs scored. Smith leads the NAIA with 27 home runs, 199 total bases, 1.093 slugging percentage, 0.47 homers per game, 1.88 RBIs per game and 3.43 total bases per game. Smith boasts of a .500 batting average and 33 stolen bases.
Phil McSpadden's head-coaching record stands at 1,720-382 in his 32nd year as Oklahoma City coach. OCU leads the NAIA in national titles (10), runner-up finishes (five) and World Series appearances (31).
OCU (54-6) took the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament title, upending top-ranked defending national champion USAO 1-0 on Sunday at Ann Lacy Stadium. The Stars halted the longest winning streak in college softball history at 59 games.
Olivet Nazarene (38-8) swept the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships. Emily Carstens, a senior, fuels the Tigers offensively and in the pitching circle with a team-high .476 average, 53 RBIs and 12 stolen bases to go with a 23-4 mark, 1.40 earned run average and 152 strikeouts in 169.2 innings.
Morningside (30-9) swiped the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament crown. Senior Hallie Misiaszek ranks among the NAIA's top 20 with 22 wins and a 1.33 ERA.
Friends (28-17) reeled in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament title. Sophomore Hali Walters tops the conference with 19 victories while striking out 167 batters this season.
