Stars down Texas Wesleyan 11-5

OCU nails down NAIA Championship Opening Round berth

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University secured a berth in the NAIA Baseball Championship Opening Round with an 11-5 victory over Texas Wesleyan on Tuesday at Pirate Field on the campus of Putnam City High School in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament.
Texas Wesleyan, ranked 14th, collected an 8-1 win over the Stars earlier Tuesday. Eighth-ranked OCU (46-12) will find out its next destination when the Opening Round pairings get revealed 4 p.m. CDT Thursday on the NAIA Facebook page.
Dylan Grove turned in his finest performance as a Star to propel Oklahoma City. Grove, a senior right-hander from Moore, Okla., posted season highs with 8.2 innings pitched and 11 strikeouts. Grove (6-2) allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks. He logged 126 pitches and recorded three strikeouts in the third. Kolin Marley, a junior righty from Norman, Okla., retired the final batter.
The Stars overcame a 3-0 second-inning deficit. OCU pushed across four runs in the third with Dylan Taylor driving in the first run on a base hit to right field.
Elliott Cary added a sacrifice fly, then Quinton Walbergh knocked in a run with a single to left. Noah Barks reached home plate with the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
Peyton Crispin crushed a solo shot that cleared the wall near the right-field foul pole to put the Stars ahead 11-3 in the eighth. OCU scored 11 unanswered runs.
Caleb Davis clouted a homer to left to give OCU a 5-3 fourth-inning edge. Davis also had a run-scoring single as part of a four-run seventh. Seth Jones nailed a two-run double along the left-field foul line.
Taylor bunted to bring in a run in the sixth. Taylor, a junior from Tulsa, Okla., went 2-for-2 with two runs driven in, while Jones, a sophomore from El Reno, Okla., had a 3-for-3 performance with two RBIs and a stolen base.
Davis, a junior from Yukon, Okla., sparked OCU with a single, double and homer as part of a 3-for-5 showing with three runs scored, a stolen base and two RBIs. Crispin, a sophomore from Lookeba, Okla., went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs.
Walbergh, a senior from Edmond, Okla., turned in a 3-for-5 stat line with a run scored and an RBI, and Noah Barks, a freshman from Mustang, Okla., went 2-for-6 with a run scored.
In the first game of the day, Jesse Ramirez limited OCU to one run on six hits. Ramirez (6-2) struck out seven in seven innings. He struck out the side in the fifth.
Davis gave OCU its lone run by smacking an RBI double along the left-field foul line. Davis finished off a 14-pitch at-bat on the play and cut the Stars' deficit to 3-1.
Davis went 2-for-4 with a run driven in. Crispin and Walbergh each went 1-for-3. Davis contributed an 11-for-20 performance with two homers and seven RBIs, while Walbergh was 8-for-17 with four RBIs throughout the SAC Tournament.
Tyler Williams, a junior from Peoria, Ariz., pounded five homers and drove in 12 runs to top all hitters in the SAC Tournament. Williams went 7-for-16 during the tournament.
USAO became the SAC Tournament champion for the second year in a row by virtue of being the final unbeaten team in the tournament. The league forewent the tournament title game after heavy rains this week delayed the tournament and with the NAIA deadline to complete conference tournaments approaching.
