OCU pummels Mid-America Christian 26-2

Williams matches most homers hit this season in NAIA

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University advanced past Mid-America Christian with a 26-2 romp Monday night at Putnam City High School's Pirate Field.
Tyler Williams, a junior from Peoria, Ariz., powered Oklahoma City by crushing four home runs. The Stars (45-11) take on Texas Wesleyan at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Jim Wade Stadium.
Williams went 4-for-6, scored four runs and drove in eight runs. Williams became the second NAIA player to hit four homers in a game this year, joining Joe Johnson of Vanguard (Calif.) against Providence Christian (Calif.). Johnson performed the feat Jan. 26.
Williams struck for a solo homer, a towering shot beyond the left-center field wall, with one out in the fifth. Williams nailed a two-run blast to left in the sixth. Williams crushed a three-run homer near the left-field foul line and hammered a three-run shot to right-center in the eighth inning. Williams has hit 19 homers this year.
Denney Crabaugh stands two victories shy of reaching 1,500 career wins. Crabaugh owns a career mark of 1,498-457-2 in his 31st year as Oklahoma City coach. Crabaugh has guided OCU to 14 NAIA World Series appearances, 14 50-win seasons and the 2005 national championship since 1989. OCU has posted the most wins in college baseball since 1991 with 1,432 under Crabaugh.
OCU tallied 17 runs on 11 hits in the eighth inning. Caleb Davis bashed a three-run homer to left. Chris Goldston smacked a two-run triple off the right-center field wall. John Anthon and Daxton Marley smashed pinch-hit two-run doubles in the inning.
Two of Williams' homers came at Jim Wade Stadium and the other two happened at Putnam City.
Weather forced a change of venue for the contest Monday. The game started 8:47 p.m. Sunday at Jim Wade Stadium. Rain showers poured on the field and halted the game in the top of the seventh inning at 11:24 p.m. Sunday. The game shifted to Putnam City High School after Jim Wade Stadium was deemed unplayable after heavy rains the previous week.
Davis, a junior from Yukon, Okla., recorded a 4-for-6 performance with three runs scored and three RBIs, while Quinton Walbergh, a senior from Edmond, Okla., had a 3-for-4 game with three runs scored and two RBIs for OCU.
Dylan Taylor, a junior from Tulsa, Okla., went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs driven in, and Elliott Cary, a senior from Niceville, Fla., put together a 2-for-6 showing, scored two runs and knocked in two runs.
Justin Berry benefited from the offensive explosion to notch the victory. Berry, a junior left-hander from Union City, Calif., picked up career highs with 13 strikeouts in six innings pitched in his third start of the year. Berry escaped bases-loaded jams in the first and second innings. Berry (4-1) struck out Raymond Rodriguez in the first and fanned Luis Sanchez in the second to retire the side.
Goldston, a freshman right-hander from Leedey, Okla., finished up on the mound. Goldston tallied four strikeouts in two innings.
The Stars plated their most runs and piled up their most hits (27) since a 27-1 rout of Friends (Kan.) on April 17, 2018 in Wichita, Kan.
Jake Ford of Spalding (Ky.) set the NAIA single-game record by hitting five homers against Tennessee Wesleyan on May 9, 2003. David Bergin from Tennessee Wesleyan equaled the five homers on April 22, 2011 against Reinhardt (Ga.).
