Stars split doubleheader against Southwestern

OCU wins the season series against Southwestern 3-1

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University defeated Southwestern (Kan.) 9-4 in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader before falling 6-3 in the second game at Jim Wade Stadium.
OCU's Dylan Grove commanded the Stars in game one with a complete game on four strikeouts, while only allowing three hits, two walk and gave up four runs, one earned.
The Stars, ranked fifth in NAIA baseball, went to 31-9 overall while Southwestern moved to 14-19 on the year. Grove, a senior from Moore, Okla., threw 103 pitches in his first complete game of the season to improve to 5-1.
Southwestern grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first inning off a Jalen Jones leadoff home run.
In the third inning OCU took the lead with two runs. Elliott Cary knocked his tying team high seventh home run down the right field line and Tyler Williams came in to score on a Peyton Crispin's fielder's choice.
Southwestern scored two in the fourth, when Ryan Gotchall singled to center to drive in Jacob Gotchall and Donovan McMullen, then Jones singled home Jared Kiessling.
The Stars, rallied in the fifth to take the lead when Bryson Lierle singled home Cary, John Anthon drove in Williams on a double to deep center and Garrett Horton singled home Lierle putting OCU out front 5-4. Williams went 3-of-3 with three runs scored, three RBIs, two doubles and a walk, while Cary went 2-for-2 with three runs, two walks and an RBI.
The Stars added two insurance runs in the sixth when Williams knocked a bases clearing double to score Jared Hazeldine, Quinton Walbergh and Cary, then Michael Spetter drove in Williams.
In game two, Southwestern got out front quick scoring three runs in the top of the first on two bases loaded walks sandwiching a single to center. The Moundbuilders extended the lead to 5-0 on a two-run home run from John Mareks in the third inning.
OCU got on the board in the third when Spetter and Hazeldine led off the inning with back-to-back doubles into the left field corner to trim Southwestern's lead to 5-1. Southwestern responded with a run in the fourth to make it a 6-1 Moundbuilder's advantage.
In the fourth inning, the Stars narrowed the gap to 6-2 on a Crispin RBI single scoring Williams.
OCU had two straight doubles by Cary and Williams in the seventh to get the final score of 6-3. Southwestern' starter Tanner Olmstead registered the win on five innings pitched with six strikeouts. The Star's Kolin Marley picked up the loss on three innings pitched with five strikeouts and fell to 3-1 on the season. Chris Bennefield contributed two innings of relief for the Stars, while allowing one hit and notching five strikeouts. Tyler Milligan added an inning and Tanner Andrews threw the final inning striking out two.
Williams went 2-for-3 with a run, a RBI and drew a walk, while Cary finished 2-for-4.
The Stars face Southwestern Assemblies of God at 7 p.m. Friday at Jim Wade Stadium.
