WAXAHACHIE, Texas – Oklahoma City University took 8-0 and 5-3 wins over Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) on Friday afternoon at the Waxahachie Sports Complex.
Jaden Shores collected victories in both ends of the doubleheader for OCU. The Stars, ranked second in NAIA softball, went to 40-4, 22-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Shores, a junior from Blanchard, Okla., tossed a one-hitter in the first game. Shores allowed Rhian Journey's base hit in Southwestern Assemblies of God's first at-bat of the game. Shores retired 13 in a row before Kayla Milstead drew a walk with two out in the fifth inning. Shores struck out five in six innings of work.
Kylie Dodson hit a sacrifice fly to left field to put OCU on top 3-0 in the fourth. Dodson's RBI base hit to left gave the Stars a 7-0 fifth-inning advantage.
Shelby Riggs socked an RBI double to left as part of a three-run fifth for OCU. The Stars took a 6-0 lead on Riggs' double.
Brittany Perez gave the Stars a 1-0 lead in the first with a single to left.
Riggs, a redshirt freshman from Binger, Okla., had a 3-for-3 game in the first with two runs scored and an RBI, while Morgan McCallum, a junior from Mesquite, Texas, added a 3-for-4 performance. Dodson, a freshman from Mustang, Okla., drove in two runs.
In the second game, Dodson earned her third save of the year. Dodson fanned Destinee Vindiola to finish the contest with the tying runs in scoring position.
Shores had nine strikeouts in six innings pitched. Shores went to 21-3 on the year. Dodson collected the final three outs.
Bailey Whitmore nailed a run-scoring base hit to left field to put OCU on top 5-0 in the second inning.
Julianne Abeloe tallied an RBI single to center to provide the Stars a 3-0 advantage in the first. Jaci Smith pounded an RBI triple into left-center field to account for OCU's first run of the game.
Smith, a senior from Godley, Texas, had a 2-for-4 performance with two runs scored and an RBI, and Kennedy Jackson, a sophomore from Moore, Okla., supplied a 2-for-4 effort with two runs scored. Shores went 2-for-3 with a double.
Oklahoma City faces Langston in a 5 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
