OCU stomps Southwestern 10-6, 13-2

Fifth-ranked Stars reach double digits in runs for sixth time this year

WINFIELD, Kan. – Oklahoma City University blistered Southwestern (Kan.) 10-6 and 13-2 on Tuesday at the Broadway Recreational Complex.
The Stars clubbed seven home runs in the doubleheader sweep. Oklahoma City (25-4) moved up to fifth in the newest NAIA baseball rankings.
In the first game, OCU clinched the win with a four-run seventh inning. Bryson Lierle sparked the Stars' uprising with a two-run homer over the left-field fence. Tristan Williams nailed an RBI double to left, while John Anthon knocked in a run with base hit to left.
Anthon pounded a three-run blast over the left-field wall to give the Stars a 6-2 sixth-inning advantage.
Elliott Cary swatted an RBI double into the left-center field gap in the fifth to break a 2-2 tie. Southwestern cut the OCU lead to 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth.
Justin Berry earned the save by getting the last out with the bases loaded. Joseph Rankin hit a ground ball where Williams retired a runner at third base.
Dylan Grove, a senior right-hander from Moore, Okla., scooped up the win with 4.2 innings of work. Grove (3-1) struck out five and allowed five hits and two walks. Tyler Milligan threw for a scoreless inning. Berry, a junior lefty from Union City, Calif., posted his second save this year.
Lierle, a junior from Altus, Okla., went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, and Anthon, a junior from Dublin, Calif., drove in four runs with a 2-for-4 performance.
Cary, a senior from Niceville, Fla., had a 2-for-4 game with two RBIs, while Williams went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Seth Jones, a sophomore from El Reno, Okla., went 2-for-4.
In the second game, Cary and Caleb Davis each hit a pair of homers. Quinton Walbergh and Cary crushed back-to-back homers in the sixth to increase OCU's lead to 7-0.
Davis put the Stars on the scoreboard by smacking a two-run shot to left in the fourth. Cary went deep to right-center for a two-run homer in the fifth. Davis homered to left in the seventh for the final margin.
OCU plated four runs each in the sixth and the seventh. Anthon put the Stars ahead 9-0 with an RBI single in the sixth. In the seventh, Garrett Horton hit a sacrifice fly, while Chris Goldston added a run-scoring base hit.
Davis, a junior from Yukon, Okla., went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored, while Cary was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs driven in. Lierle scored three runs and went 2-for-2, and Goldston, a freshman from Leedey, Okla., had a 2-for-2 performance with two runs scored. Williams, a freshman from Southlake, Texas, brought home a pair of runs.
Kolin Marley, a junior righty from Norman, Okla., took the win. Marley (3-0) had three strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Berry, Chris Bennefield and Spencer Flatt each took the mound.
OCU is scheduled to play Bacone at 2 p.m. Thursday in Muskogee, Okla.
