OCU ousts Our Lady of the Lake 85-70

10th-ranked Stars take on fourth-rated Montana Western at 7 p.m. MDT Tuesday in championship

BILLINGS, Mont. – Oklahoma City University walloped Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) 85-70 on Monday night at Rimrock Arena at MetraPark in the NAIA Division I women's basketball tournament Fab Four.
Oklahoma City made the national title game for the 13th time. The 10th-ranked Stars (33-4) tangle with fourth-ranked Montana Western (29-4) at 7 p.m. MDT (8 p.m. CDT) Tuesday.
Oklahoma City takes aim at its 10th national championship overall and second in three years. The title tilt will be broadcast via ESPN3. OCU owns nine national championships previously won in 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017.
Abby Selzer powered the Stars with 20 points and eight rebounds. Selzer, a freshman from Thomas, Okla., nailed 10 of 12 free-throw tries.
OCU owned the advantage at the foul line, sinking 33 of 38 tries from beyond the free-throw line Monday. The Stars hit 22 of 23 free throws in the second half. Our Lake of the Lake (Texas) hit 13 of 17 free-throw attempts for the game.
Destinee King had 18 points and 12 rebounds for No. 12 Our Lady of the Lake (28-7). The Saints were in their first trip to the NAIA Tournament semifinals.
"It means so much to be able to play in the national championship game, something we've always dreamed about, and to have this special group and to make it this far is just a blessing, and we're excited to be there," said Michaela Kay, who contributed nine points and six rebounds to OCU's cause.
The Stars limited Our Lady of the Lake to 36.6 percent shooting from the field. The Saints entered the contest with the NAIA's top scoring offense, while Oklahoma City has allowed the lowest opponents' field-goal percentage among the NAIA. OCU avenged an 89-81 loss to Our Lady of the Lake on Nov. 17 in Oklahoma City.
"We just play our game when we get on the floor," Kay said. "Tomorrow's going to be no different. We're just going to play our hardest."
Mallory Lockhart, a freshman from Keller, Texas, supplied the Stars with 13 points and 8-for-8 shooting on free throws. NaShyla Hammons, a junior from Oklahoma City, produced 11 points, 17 rebounds and four assists, while Brennyn Seagler, a junior from Gruver, Texas, delivered 10 points and 4-for-5 accuracy from the floor for OCU.
Hammons posted her third double-double of the season and second of the tournament while hauling down her career-best rebounding total. OCU's second unit tallied 47 points compared to 24 for Our Lady of the Lake's bench.
Kay and Lockhart downed a couple of free throws each to key a string of six unanswered points to put the Stars in front for good. Selzer pocketed a steal, which led to her layup assisted by Seagler that built the OCU lead to 69-63 with 4:43 remaining.
Kay scored, then assisted Taylor LaCour on a bucket to fuel a Stars uprising early in the fourth. Taylor Sylvester laid the ball in for a 61-56 OCU lead with 7:46 left.
OCU erased Our Lady of the Lake's nine-point first-quarter advantage. Lena Wilson scored to put the Saints ahead 23-14 with 1:57 to go in the first period. The Stars rallied to tie the game 29-29 on Selzer's free throw at the 6:20 mark of the second quarter.
The Stars went on top using a 7-0 third-quarter flurry. Taylor LaCour contributed a 3-point play plus a basket to give OCU a 44-39 lead with 6:55 left in the third.
King gave Our Lady of the Lake a 49-48 edge with a bucket at the 4:21 mark of the third. Lockhart answered with a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer for OCU.
