Stars finish as national runners-up to Montana Western 75-59

OCU reaches 33 wins for seventh time in program history this season

BILLINGS, Mont. – Oklahoma City University concluded its title run with a 75-59 loss to Montana Western on Tuesday night in the NAIA Division I women's basketball tournament championship.
Oklahoma City finished as national runner-up for the fourth time. The 10th-ranked Stars ended 2018-19 at 33-5.
OCU owns nine national championships won in 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017. The Stars have been national runners-up in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2019. OCU made its second national title game appearance in three years. OCU went to 75-16 in NAIA Tournament play for the best mark in the tournament history.
Brianna King powered Montana Western (30-4) to its first national title with 37 points and three steals. King hit 15 of 22 field-goal tries and 6-for-13 from 3-point range. King garnered the NAIA Tournament most valuable player after earlier being named the WBCA NAIA player of the year.
Mallory Lockhart led the Stars with 11 points while going 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. Abby Selzer chipped in 10 points and four rebounds for OCU. Selzer picked up first-team all-tournament acclaim, while Lockhart and Brennyn Seagler made the all-tournament second team.
Selzer, a freshman from Thomas, Okla., averaged 15.8 points and 6.0 rebounds a game with a 56.9 percent field-goal percentage during the tournament. Lockhart, a freshman from Keller, Texas, supplied the Stars with 12.2 points per contest and 92.3 percent shooting from the free-throw line in national-tournament play. Seagler, a junior from Gruver, Texas, turned in 9.0 points and 4.8 rebounds per game in the tournament.
Oklahoma City notched its 13th 30-win season in program history. OCU has reached 25 victories in 20 seasons over the past 21 years. OCU has posted a 648-87 mark for an .882 winning percentage since 1998-99. The 2018-19 Stars became the seventh team in OCU history to reach 33 victories in a season.
Montana Western shot 50.8 percent from the field for the best by an OCU opponent this season. The Bulldogs became the first team this season to shoot 50 percent from the floor against the Stars. Wayland Baptist (Texas) had the best shooting percentage by an OCU for this season at 44.8 percent on Jan. 10 in Oklahoma City. Opponents shot 30.3 percent from the field against the Stars this season.
The Bulldogs pushed their advantage into double figures with a 9-0 run over the first and second quarters. King sparked the surge with a trey and capped it with a jumper in the paint. King's bucket gave Montana Western a 30-16 lead early in the second period.
