OCU edges Panhandle State 73-69

Stars advance to SAC Tournament championship 4 p.m. Saturday

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University nudged past Panhandle State 73-69 on Friday night at Abe Lemons Arena in the Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament semifinals.
OCU's Elijah Christman, a senior from Justin, Texas, delivered the go-ahead 3-pointer with 28.7 seconds remaining. The Stars (20-10) reached the SAC Tournament championship game 4 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.

Oklahoma City will make its 13th appearance in the SAC Tournament title tilt and look for its 10th SAC Tournament crown. The Stars notched their third consecutive 20-win season.
Christman struck for the crucial trey from the left wing off Trae Bryant's feed, putting the Stars in front 69-66. Breiman Alexander cut OCU's lead to 71-69 with a 3 at nine seconds left. Oklahoma City's Chris Williams added four free throws to help clinch the outcome.
"We made the plays down the stretch to get the job done," OCU coach Vinay Patel said. "Elijah Christman, I was complaining for a stretch because he couldn't shoot and lost his touch. We had a long talk after we lost to MACU. I just thought, 'There's not a more confident person in your skills than me right now. Get out of your own head and stop being mental.' He went 4-for-4 against Langston and 5-for-5 tonight and hit the big one."
Williams, a senior from Denver, spearheaded the Stars with 16 points, six rebounds and five assists. Williams canned all 11 of his free-throw attempts on the night.
Christman nailed each of his five 3-point shots for 15 points to go with four rebounds off the pine. Anthony Davis, a junior from Lewisville, Texas, contributed 11 points, while Eric McCollum, a senior from Newburgh, N.Y., added nine points and nine rebounds for OCU.
Alexander, a senior from Marlin, Texas, propelled the Aggies with 26 points, seven rebounds, two steals and seven 3-pointers. Jaedon Whitfield had 18 points, 10 rebounds and two steals for Panhandle State (15-14).
"Breiman Alexander is incredible," Patel said. "You give him a step, you lose him for a second, you pay for it every time. I thought he did a great job. I think we did a pretty good job on him."
Oklahoma City overcame a seven-point first-half deficit. Whitfield put Panhandle State up 62-58 with a pair of foul shots with 8:19 to go. The Stars responded with six points in a row as Williams sank five free throws.
