OCU starts off with two wins

No. 1-ranked Stars go 2-0 in Cowtown Classic

FORT WORTH, Texas – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University trampled Bethel (Kan.) 15-1 and William Penn (Iowa) 18-1 on Friday in the Cowtown Classic at Gateway Park.
Brittany Perez drove in six runs for OCU. The Stars, ranked No. 1 in NAIA softball, opened the season with a pair of victories.

Oklahoma City was originally set to play LSU-Alexandria in the event, but that game was canceled due to inclement weather.
Against Bethel, the Stars exploded for 11 runs in the fourth inning. Perez, a senior from Ventura, Calif., and Gaby Zucchiatti each had a two-run base hit in the inning.
Morgan McCallum, a junior from Mesquite, Texas, went 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Julianne Abeloe, a senior from Santa Paula, Calif., had a 2-for-2 game with three RBIs. Baileigh Loux, a sophomore from Reno, Nev., turned in a 2-for-4 performance and scored three runs.

Jaden Shores, a junior from Blanchard, Okla., earned the victory. Shores struck out four and allowed one hit and an unearned run in five innings.
Against William Penn, Perez put together a 3-for-5 game with three runs scored and four runs driven in. McCallum was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs, and Shelby Riggs, a redshirt freshman from Binger, Okla., went 3-for-3 with four RBIs.
OCU plated seven runs in the fifth. Perez, Bailey Whitmore and Loux nailed run-scoring singles. Abeloe drove in a run with a base hit to right.
Kylie Dodson snatched the win in her college pitching debut. Dodson, a freshman from Mustang, Okla., fanned five while permitting one hit and an unearned run in five innings.

The Stars take on Bethany (Kan.) at 10 a.m., then Houston-Victoria at 2 p.m. Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas.
