OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City University women's basketball team led wire-to-wire and cruised to a 95-37 victory over Southwestern Christian on Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, ranked 12th in NAIA Division I, started the game on a 12-0 run, shooting 8-for-8 during that span. Southwestern Christian missed its first nine shots and turned the ball over 10 times before getting on the scoreboard. OCU improved to 22-2, 15-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
"I just liked the way that we started the game off offensively and defensively," head coach Bo Overton said. "Sharing the ball like that got us great looks. I thought Brennyn Seagler got off to such a great start to kind of spread the floor out a little bit and then we were able to attack inside, but when you share the ball and trust each other like we did in the first quarter that is fun to watch.
Seagler, a junior from Gruver, Texas, scored a season high 17 points to go with seven rebounds, four assists and a steal, while Shamika Smith also chipped in a season high 15 points, dishing out three assists, grabbing three steals and a rebound.
"Brennyn is playing with so much confidence right now," said Overton. "She is so confident and knows where she fits on this team. She is just such a good player, she is so skilled and so smart. You just have to prod her to get more aggressive at the basket and I think she has done that the past few weeks."
Abby Selzer made 9 shots for the Stars. Selzer, a freshman from Thomas, Okla., provided Oklahoma City with 21 points, seven rebounds and a steal in the contest.
"I am really excited about Abby," Overton Said. "She does things she doesn't even know that she is doing. Her ceiling is really up there. It is fun to watch her play. She plays so hard; she just soaks things in and she talks to me about coverages. Usually a freshman like that you just want to stand there in the lane, but she is really thinking about coverages. She is such a weapon, if you spread out on our shooters she is one-on-one and you cannot guard her one-on-one. I am really proud of the way she has been playing."
The Stars outscored SCU 47-16 in the second half, 50-12 in points in the paint and 12-2 in fast break points. Southwestern Christian falls to 10-12, 7-9 in the SAC.
Oklahoma City as a team assisted on 24-of-38 made shots. Michaela Kay, a senior from Spokane, Wash., led the way handing out a team high five assists.
As a team, OCU shot 73.3 percent from the floor in the first quarter and 58.5 percent in the game while the Eagles shot just 21.1 percent for the first half. The Stars largest lead in the game was 59 points when the score was 91-32. The Stars held SCU to 19.4 percent shooting from the floor and 8.0 percent from 3-point range, thanks to collecting eight blocks for the game. Taylor Sylvester, a junior from Chickasha, Okla., swatted six blocks and grabbed eight rebounds.
Oklahoma City will head to Waxahachie, Texas, to take on Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) at 6 p.m. Thursday.
