Wayland Baptist knocks off OCU 86-74

Stars go to 2-3 against ranked teams this season

PLAINVIEW, TEXAS – Oklahoma City University fell to Wayland Baptist (Texas) 86-74 on Saturday at the Hutcherson Center in a showdown of top 20-ranked teams in NAIA Division I men's basketball.
Chris Williams, a senior from Denver, produced 28 points, four assists and four steals for OCU. The 18th-ranked Stars dropped to 17-9, 12-8 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Ninth-ranked Wayland Baptist (22-6, 17-3 SAC) secured its first SAC regular-season championship.
Williams sank 4 of 11 from 3-point range. Eric Wattree, a junior from Spokane, Wash., turned in season bests with 17 points, four assists and five 3-pointers for OCU. Eric McCollum, a senior from Newburgh, N.Y., grabbed 11 rebounds to reach double digits in rebounds for the seventh time overall and second time in conference play this season.
Oklahoma City put together a 13-0 second-half surge. Williams and Wattree buried back-to-back 3s, while Anthony Davis scored a 3-point play to cut Wayland Baptist's edge to 69-66 with 7:13 remaining.
McCollum sank a foul shot to reduce OCU's deficit to 73-71 at the 5:26 mark. Wayland Baptist responded with six unanswered points.
Wattree hit a trey to tie the game 5-5 early, but Wayland Baptist followed with the game's next eight points.
The Stars meet USAO at 7:45 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena. OCU concludes its home slate this regular season.
