OCU collects 88-42 win over Panhandle State

Stars improves winning streak to 12 games

GOODWELL, Okla. – Oklahoma City University reached 25 victories for the 20th time in 21 years with a 88-42 blowout victory over Panhandle State on Thursday evening at Anchor D Arena.
 Mallory Lockhart and Abby Selzer led the way for the Stars , ranked 10th in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improving to 25-2, 18-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, dropping Panhandle State to 12-13, 8-11 in the SAC.
  Lockhart, a freshman from Keller, Texas, led all scorers with 18 points while grabbing three rebounds and a steal, while Selzer, a freshman from Thomas, Okla., contributed 14 points and seven rebounds.
Since 1998-99, Oklahoma City has recorded a 640-84 mark for an .884 winning percentage, averaging 31 wins a season. OCU has produced 12 30-win seasons and 21 consecutive NAIA Division I Tournament appearances while winning eight of the program's nine national championships over the past 21 years. Oklahoma City owns the NAIA's longest streak of top-25 appearances with 251 consecutive rankings dating back to 1997-98.
Joining Lockhart and Selzer with double figures in the scoring column were Shamika Smith with 11 points and Brennyn Seagler with 10. Smith, a junior from Midwest City, Okla., had seven of her 11 points in the first half of Thursday's contest and added five steals and three assists. Seagler, a junior from Gruver, Texas, collected eight of her 10 points in the first half, while adding six rebounds, five assists and a steal.
The Stars jumped to a 13-8 lead after the first quarter and continued to pull away in the second, extending its lead to 14 at the half. OCU held Panhandle State to just 9-of-27 shooting in the first half.
Oklahoma City cranked up the scoring in the second half, going on a 12-0 run capped by a JoHanna Beathard layup at the 3:23 mark in the third quarter. OCU forced its opponent into 16 total turnovers on Thursday and turned those turnovers into 16 points.
The Stars were able to cruise to victory, by closing the game on a 32-5 over the final 12:28 minutes. Taylor Sylvester turned in eight points, seven rebounds, five blocks and two steals.
Lockhart added six more treys Thursday making her total 83 made 3-pointers on the season. Lockhart's 3-point baskets are among the top 10 in a season in program history.
OCU returns to action at 2 p.m. Saturday against No. 6 Wayland Baptist (Texas) in Plainview, Texas.
