Stars drop 76-61 decision to Wayland Baptist

OCU limits foe to 35 or worse shooting from floor for 10th consecutive game

PLAINVIEW, TEXAS – Wayland Baptist (Texas) prevailed over Oklahoma City University 76-61 on Saturday at the Hutcherson Center in a battle of top 10-ranked teams in NAIA Division I women's basketball.
Abby Selzer, a freshman from Thomas, Okla., became the Stars' lone double-digit scorer. Oklahoma City, ranked 10th, went to 25-3, 18-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Sixth-ranked Wayland Baptist (24-4, 18-2 SAC) ended OCU's 11-game winning streak. Wayland Baptist swept the season series to gain an edge for the top seed in the SAC Tournament.
Selzer produced 17 points and four rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench. Shamika Smith, a junior from Midwest City, Okla., provided OCU with nine points and two steals.
Michaela Kay, a senior from Spokane, Wash., picked up eight points and six rebounds, and Taylor LaCour, a senior from Georgetown, Texas, added eight points and two rebounds for the Stars.
OCU managed 34 percent shooting from the field as the Stars shot sub-35 percent from the floor for the third time in 2018-19. The Stars entered the contest having posted a 50 percent field-goal percentage in four consecutive games and leading the NAIA in field-goal percentage.

Wayland Baptist scuffled to 34.7 percent shooting from the floor. OCU held an opponent to below 35 percent shooting from the field for the 10th contest in a row. OCU has allowed the NAIA's lowest opponents' field-goal percentage.
Selzer's transition bucket sliced the Stars' deficit to 28-27 with 2:16 showing before halftime. The Flying Queens pushed their lead into double digits with an 8-0 run that ran from the second to the third quarter. Kambrey Blakey hit free throws to give Wayland Baptist a 40-28 advantage at the 8:44 mark of the third.
Mallory Lockhart converted a 4-point play to cut OCU's deficit to 55-52 with 7:49 to go. Lockhart sank a 3-pointer and a free throw. Deborah VanDijk had a free throw to grow Wayland Baptist's lead back to double figures at 64-54 with 5:00 left.
