Stars sink Wiley 65-52

OCU lead entire way for 9-0 start

MARSHALL, Texas – Oklahoma City University got past Wiley (Texas) 65-52 on Wednesday at the Alumni Gymnasium.
Payton Taylor collected 15 points while sinking a season-high three 3-pointers for the Stars. OCU, ranked second in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 9-0 in 2019-20.
Taylor, a junior from Ada, Okla., hit 5 of 10 shots from the field and 3 of 4 3-pointers on Wednesday. Mallory Lockhart, a sophomore from Keller, Texas, produced 14 points and a season-high four assists for Oklahoma City. Lockhart shot 4-of-10 from the floor and grabbed two steals.
NaShyla Hammons, a senior from Oklahoma City, added 12 points for the Stars, and Taylor Sylvester, a senior from Chickasha, Okla., chipped in 10 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.
Taylor, Hammons and Sylvester each hauled in a team-best 10 rebounds, while Taylor contributed six assists for the OCU.
The Stars led 21-15 at the end of the first quarter, and 32-23 at halftime. Oklahoma City shot 37.7 percent from the field while shooting 9-of-20 from beyond the arc in the game.
OCU have held opponents to a 31.8 percent field-goal percentage this season. Wiley finished with 29.4 percent shooting from the field Wednesday. Keiser and Our Lady of the Lake both shot 45.7 percent from the floor in OCU's last two wins.
Oklahoma City did not let Wiley lead once during the contest, which was tied once, 6-6, at the 7:37 mark of the first quarter.
The Stars went on an 8-0 run to jump ahead 19-9 in the first period. Jumpers from Abby Selzer and Taylor, along with a Hammons 3-pointer, sparked the spurt.
Taylor nailed a 3 to provide OCU with a 65-41 advantage, its largest lead of the game, with 4:33 remaining to cap a 12-0 spurt. Wiley ended regulation on an 11-0 run after the basket.
Taylor hit two 3-pointers and Sylvester connected on three jumpshots during the 12-0 run.
Sylvester scored all 10 of her points in the second half.
The Stars meet Langston at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2 in Langston, Okla. to resume conference play.
