Stars overpower Wayland Baptist 70-46

OCU begins SAC play 2-0

OKLAHOMA CITY – Abby Selzer recorded a team-high 14 points and led Oklahoma City University to a 70-46 victory over Wayland Baptist (Texas) Saturday afternoon at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, ranked third in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference play, while Wayland Baptist, who is ranked fifth, dropped to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the SAC. Three of OCU's five losses during the 2018-19 season came against the Flying Queens.
"This early in the season, to play a team of that caliber, and for us to play three-and-a-half quarters that we did, I am really excited about that," coach Bo Overton said. "We saw a lot of things out there that we got better at. We talked all week long about both teams – Panhandle [State] and Wayland – and how hard they play and how tough they are. We had to match that. A lot of that came through on the rebounding. Wayland does a great job of offensive rebounding. Especially in your zone, when you do not really have people to block out, I thought we got to our areas and then it was a fight to go get the ball. I thought we did a great job with that."
Oklahoma City jumped on the Flying Queens early, creating a 21-9 edge near the beginning of the second quarter. OCU forced Wayland Baptist into rugged shots, holding their opponent to just 31.3 percent from the floor and 2-of-9 from 3-point territory in the first half. WBU ended the first half on a 9-2 run, cutting the deficit to six points, before OCU's Payton Taylor banked in a long 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Stars lead 32-23 at the break.
Selzer ignited OCU on offense, going for eight points on 3-of-7 shooting from the field, 2-of-2 from the free throw line, while adding two blocks in the first half. Mallory Lockhart and Erika Ankney took over scoring a combined 18 points after the break. Lockhart, a sophomore from Keller, Texas, contributed all 11 of her points in the second half on 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc, while adding four rebounds and two assists. Lockhart shot 0-of-2 in the first half, then went 3-of-5 from the field and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe in the final 20 minutes. Ankney, a sophomore from Harrah, Okla., contributed 13 points, six rebounds and two assists, while Selzer, a sophomore from Thomas, Okla., finished with three rebounds to go along with her 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting in 13 minutes of play.
"You have to attack the basket against them and I thought [Erika Ankney] was really good at doing that," said Overton. "Not only just to go score but to attack the basket and people can come off and we can get it to open players. She did a great job. I thought Shamika [Smith] came in and gave us great minutes. Payton Taylor again started the game off with an attack, a drive to the basket, that really kind of got us going. Just really proud of everybody for sticking with what we are doing, executing and coming out with this win."
OCU kept up the defensive standstill in the second half, holding Wayland Baptist to 20.5 percent from the floor and 4-of-25 from 3-point land for the game. The Flying Queens entered Saturday's contest as the ninth highest scoring team in NAIA Division I (85.2 points per game), but were held to a season-low 46 points. WBU was held under 50 points just one time last season.
NaShyla Hammons also recorded double figures with 11 points, five rebounds, two assists, and a steal on 4-of-5 shooting. Taylor finished the contest with seven points, five rebounds, and two assists, including one 3-point make. Brennyn Seagler, a senior from Gruver, Texas, grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds for OCU. She has collected three 10-plus rebound games this season after only recording one in 2018-19.
"She is just really smart with where that ball is coming," Overton said. "You cannot really teach stuff like that. Not only that, but just the way she handles the ball at the 4-spot. She can post you up and score. She played great."
Oklahoma City outrebounded Wayland Baptist 52-42 and led the Flying Queens in points in the paint with a 30-18 spread. OCU got 17 points from the free-throw line while Wayland Baptist got just six.
The Stars return to action on Friday for a 2 p.m. tipoff against Keiser (Fla.) in San Antonio in the Our Lady of the Lake Classic.
