Stars grab 90-58 victory over Philander Smith

OCU collects 20-plus assists for third straight game

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University grabbed a 90-58 win over Philander Smith (Ark.) on Friday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars collected 20-plus assists for their third straight game to start the season. Oklahoma City, ranked third in NAIA Division I women's basketball, moved to 3-0 on the season.
The Stars ranked second in the NAIA in assists per game, having averaged 23.5 assists a contest in their first two games. OCU recorded a season-high 25 assists versus Philander Smith on Friday. The Stars finished with 24 assists versus Texas A&M-Texarkana on Nov. 8 and 23 assists versus LSU-Shreveport on Nov. 9.
Philander Smith finished 27.5 percent from the field. The Stars have permitted teams to shoot 25.0 percent and entered Friday's contest fourth nationally in field goal percentage defense. OCU stopped Philander Smith's hot 6-0 start.
OCU's Mallory Lockhart, a sophomore from Keller, Texas, produced a career-high 23 points on 7-of-14 from 3-point territory. She achieved season highs in points, 3-pointers made and steals (2). Brennyn Seagler, a senior from Gruver, Texas, notched 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Abby Selzer, a sophomore from Thomas, Okla., added 12 points and six rebounds, while Erika Ankney, a sophomore from Harrah, Okla., supplied the Stars with nine points, four rebounds and two steals. NaShyla Hammons, a senior from Oklahoma City, posted nine points and seven rebounds. OCU registered 55 rebounds on the night.
The Stars completed an 8-1 run to pad its lead to a game-high 39 points in the fourth quarter. Jaelyn Knight hit a jumper in the paint to give the Stars an 83-49 advantage. Jordyn Eaton's short jump shot capped the run for an 88-49 advantage with 3:25 remaining.
Philander Smith's final lead was at the 4:39 mark of the first quarter when they went on top 11-9. Two buckets from Shamika Smith rallied the Stars during a 12-2 run to end the quarter. Smith hit a 3-pointer to put the Stars on top 21-13 just before the end of the period.
The Stars take on Haskell (Kan.) at 5 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
