Stars rout SAGU 3-0

Oklahoma City wins its first conference match in dominate fashion

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University men's soccer routed Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 3-0 Saturday at Brian Harvey Field for its first conference win of the season.
The Stars jumped to 6-8 on the season and 1-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. OCU, now sitting in tied for eighth in the SAC, has improved their chances of making the conference tournament, where the top eight teams in the SAC compete. SAGU fell to 1-12-1 overall and 1-5 in SAC play.
Julio Hernandez got the scoring started for the Stars on Saturday, as he retrieved a ball from Andy Flores that he nailed off a volley from 10 yards into the back of the net. The goal was Hernandez's second of the year, while Flores tallied his team-leading second assist on the season.
"It was an excellent goal, with the whole move to get him into that position," said head coach Brian Harvey. "He showed an awful lot of composure, took it nicely on his chest, the ball did not get away from him and he finished with a volley. Excellent goal."
The Stars struck again nine minutes later when a cross from Alejandro Viera met Ljubisa Palic's head in a crowded box. Palic's header went to the top left corner from eight yards to put OCU up 2-0. The sophomore from St. Gallen, Switzerland, notched his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Then in the 56th minute, OCU put the game away when Andre Salvador and Ljubisa Palic teamed up to give Hernandez a breakaway opportunity. He finished from 10 yards for the 3-0 advantage. Hernandez, a senior from El Reno, Okla., now sits second on the team in points (8) after his two-goal performance.
Andre Salvador came away with five saves in 90 minutes for the shutout. Salvador has 73 saves and 20 goals allowed this year.
Oklahoma City concludes their home slate at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Mid-America Christian at Brian Harvey Field for Senior Day.
