Stars hold fifth spot in preseason SAC poll

OCU took SAC Tournament championship last March

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University stands fifth in the preseason Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball poll as voted on by the conferences coaches.
OCU (22-11, 13-9 SAC last season) won the SAC Tournament and finished the 2018-19 regular season tied for fourth in the SAC. The Stars defeated John Brown (Ark.) in the tournament finals 74-73 on Trae Bryant's bucket with less than five seconds left.
Oklahoma City earned 72 total points in the poll, including one second-place vote. The Stars were one of five SAC teams which qualified for the 2019 NAIA Division I Championship Tournament – John Brown, Mid-America Christian, Science & Arts of Oklahoma and Wayland Baptist (Texas) were the others.
Wayland Baptist is picked first, collecting 99 total points and nine of the 11 first-place votes. John Brown and Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) also received first-place votes.
The second through fifth slots are separated by just five points in the poll. USAO brought in 77 total points for second, and Mid-America Christian had 76 for a close third. Southwestern Assemblies finished just behind in fourth place, nabbing 74 total points.
John Brown was sixth with 60 points and Texas Wesleyan was seventh with 50. Southwestern Christian checked in at eight with 34 points. Langston and Central Christian (Kan.) followed in ninth and 10th with 28 and 21 points, respectively. Panhandle State rounded out the poll in 11th place with 12 points.
The SAC Tournament begins March 3 with quarterfinals taking place at campus sites followed by the semifinals and championship March 6-7 in Plainview, Texas. The conference regular-season and tournament champions advance into the NAIA Tournament on March 18-24 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.
Six-time national champion OCU owns 13 SAC regular-season championships and 10 SAC Tournament titles.
