Stars fall short to Wayland Baptist 76-75

OCU goes to 1-1 against ranked competition this season

OKLAHOMA CITY – Wayland Baptist (Texas) prevailed 76-75 over Oklahoma City University on Thursday night at Abe Lemons Arena in a clash of ranked NAIA men's basketball teams.
Anthony Davis and Mark Howell each produced 17 points for the Stars. Oklahoma City, ranked 12th, went to 8-5, 3-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, and 24th-ranked Wayland Baptist improved to 11-4, 6-1 in the SAC.
Howell buried a 3-pointer as time expired for the final margin. Howell generated seven points in the last six seconds of the game. He sank four free throws, two of which came after stealing Wayland Baptist's inbound pass with five seconds showing.
Chris Williams drove for a transition layup with just under three minutes remaining in the game to put OCU on top 68-67. Tre Fillmore countered with a trey at the 1:12 mark, giving the Pioneers the lead for good. Wayland Baptist's J.J. Culver provided seven points in the final 18 seconds to help determine the outcome.
Wayland Baptist reeled off a 14-2 run to open the second half. Culver's fastbreak bucket gave the Pioneers their largest lead of 45-36 with 16:27 showing.
Howell pocketed a steal and turned the theft into a basket that put the Stars up 17-9 nearly midway through the first period.
Davis, a junior from Lewisville, Texas, grabbed five rebounds and shot 6-for-10 from the field, while Howell, a senior from Grand Prairie, Texas, played all 40 minutes. Howell notched his fourth double-digit scoring performance of the season, handed out nine assists and swiped a season-high four steals.
Williams, a senior from Denver, posted 13 points and four rebounds, while Joe Clarke, a senior from New Rochelle, N.Y., and Creed Kemp each scored 11 points. Kemp, a junior from Wewoka
, Okla., rang up a season-high 11 points while hitting 5 of his 6 field-goal attempts in 11 minutes of play.
The Stars host Panhandle State at 3:45 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
