OCU takes 11-8 loss to USAO in SAC Tournament title game

Stars tally six runs in ninth inning to reach extra innings

CHICKASHA, Okla. – Oklahoma City University fell short to USAO 11-8 in 10 innings in the Sooner Athletic Conference baseball tournament championship game Monday at Bill Smith Ballpark.
Stevie Thompson hit a three-run home run to give USAO, ranked eighth in the NAIA, the win in the bottom of the 10th. The fifth-ranked Stars (47-7) rallied with six runs in the ninth to force extra innings.
USAO took its second SAC Tournament championship, while OCU sought to grab its second consecutive SAC Tournament crown. The Stars, who have won 12 SAC Tournament titles, will host the NAIA Championship Opening Round Oklahoma City Bracket on May 14-17. NAIA Championship Opening Round pairings will be announced 3 p.m. CDT Thursday via the NAIA Facebook page.
OCU mounted a ninth-inning comeback as Jacob Chappell belted a home run past the left-field fence leading off the top of the inning. Elliott Cary nailed a solo blast beyond the right-field wall for back-to-back homers.
Daniel Costello knocked in a run with a two-out base hit through the middle of the infield. Garrett Foster launched a two-run double off the left-field wall, then Hunter Aguirre smacked an RBI single to right field to tie the game 8-8.
Joe Lytle gave OCU the first-inning 1-0 lead on a base hit to center. Lane Milligan pounded a homer over the right-field fence in the fourth.
In the bottom of the first, USAO built a 6-1 advantage as Daniel Lafarga had a three-run shot. Alex Sanchez added a solo homer.
Milligan, a senior from Binger, Okla., turned in a 3-for-6 day with a run scored and an RBI, while Aguirre, a senior from Oklahoma City, was 2-for-5 with a run driven in for the Stars. Lytle, a senior from Yukon, Okla., went 2-for-6, scored a run and drove in a run.
Tanner Andrews, a junior right-hander from Asher, Okla., kept USAO scoreless through 4.2 innings of one-hit relief. Andrews struck out six. Craig Knoche started for OCU, while Miguel Figueroa took the loss.
