Stars win 18th SAC Tournament title 3-1 over USAO

OCU ends tournament outscoring opponents 39-1

OKLAHOMA CITY – The fifth-ranked Oklahoma City University softball team collected its 18th Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament title after knocking off No. 3 USAO 3-1 in the tournament championship Saturday afternoon at Ann Lacy Stadium.
Abby Meador, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., earned her 12th win in the circle after recording seven strikeouts and giving up only two hits and one run in seven innings. OCU (48-7) was dominant from both the batter's box and the circle all weekend, as the Stars finished the tournament outscoring its opponents 39-1.
Oklahoma City got on the board first in the top of the second inning when Brittany Perez smacked a solo home run over the left-field fence to give the Stars an early edge. Perez, a junior from Ventrua, Calif., tallied her 10th home run of the season, tied with Jaci Smith for the most this year.
Meador continued to deal out after out in the circle, holding the Drovers without a hit for the first six innings. Back-to-back hit batters put USAO runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the second, but the Stars got out of the inning without giving up a run.
Baileigh Loux gave OCU a chance to extend its lead after hitting a double to center field in the fifth inning with one out. USAO put away the following two batters to keep the Stars' lead at 1-0. Loux, a freshman from Reno, Nev., finished the tournament leading all hitters in batting average (.667), hits (eight), runs scored (six) and doubles (six).
OCU got another runner in scoring position in the top of the seventh after Laci Joyner doubled down the left-field line. Loux was hit by a pitch two pitches later to put runners on first and second. A passed ball moved the runners up a base, then another passed ball and an error allowed both Joyner and Loux to score and give the Stars a 3-1 lead.
A leadoff double from USAO broke up Meador's no-hitter in the bottom of the seventh. The Drovers had the bases loaded with no outs and later cut into the OCU lead after a hit batter drove in USAO's first run of the game. Meador forced two infield flies and struck out the final batter to secure back-to-back conference tournament titles for Oklahoma City.
The Stars host the NAIA Championship Opening Round Oklahoma City Bracket at Ann Lacy Stadium on May 14-16. The brackets will be announced Tuesday, May 8.
