OCU earns spot in SAC title game after pair of wins

Stars face USAO in SAC Tournament championship

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University finished 3-0 in pool play of the Sooner Athletic Conference softball tournament and punched its ticket to the conference title game after a 10-0 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) and a 6-0 victory over Mid-America Christian Friday afternoon at Ann Lacy Stadium.
The Stars got dominant performances from pitchers Abby Meador and Jaden Shores, as the duo combined to throw 16 strikeouts and allow only one hit in 12 shutout innings. OCU, ranked fifth in NAIA softball, will meet No. 3 USAO in the SAC Tournament championship game at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
Oklahoma City began to pull away in the top of the second inning against SAGU after a two-RBI single from Julianne Abeloe sparked a five-run inning for the Stars. Brittany Perez capped the inning with a three-run homer to give OCU a 7-0 advantage. Perez, a junior from Ventura, Calif., went 2-for-2 with four RBIs and one run scored against the Lions.
Abeloe, a junior from Santa Paula, Calif., also finished with two hits against SAGU and added three RBIs and two runs scored. She hit her 14th double of the season in the first inning to give the Stars the first run of the game. Baileigh Loux became the third OCU player to record two hits after belting a double to center field in the top of the fifth.
Shores, a sophomore from Blanchard, Okla., improved to 14-2 in the circle and threw five shutout innings while striking out five. She has tossed five or more strikeouts in 11 games this year.
In Friday's second game, the Stars were tied at zero with Mid-America Christian through the first four and a half innings. Then in the bottom of the fifth OCU exploded for six runs to take a commanding lead.
Kennedy Jackson got the scoring started with an RBI single up the middle, then Abeloe followed with an RBI off a fielder's choice. Jaci Smith singled through the right side to bring in two more runs and Bailey Whitmore put OCU ahead 6-0 after two-RBI double to right field.
Jackson, a freshman from Moore, Okla., was the only Star to notch multiple hits against the Lady Evangels with two. Jackson has recorded a hit in 47 of 50 games this season and leads Oklahoma City with 82 hits and a .466 average.
Meador, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., pitched seven shutout innings and allowed one hit while striking out 11. She improved to 11-1 in the circle this year.
