OCU rallies past Indiana Wesleyan 8-7

Second-ranked Stars advance to 9 a.m. contest Tuesday

CLERMONT, Fla. – Oklahoma City University pulled off an 8-7 come-from-behind win over Indiana Wesleyan in eight innings Monday at Legends Way Ballpark.
Jaci Smith took advantage of an error to score the winning run for the Stars. No. 2-rated Oklahoma City (52-8) competes next vs. top-ranked Georgia Gwinnett at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
OCU played in its first extra-innings contest since prevailing 6-1 in eight innings vs. Houston-Victoria on April 2, 2016 in Farmers Branch, Texas. The Stars and seventh-ranked Indiana Wesleyan (58-12) combined for 30 hits, the most in an NAIA Softball World Series game since the format began in 2013. The Stars overcame 5-3 and 7-5 deficits to remain alive in the tournament.
With two out in the eighth inning, Smith reached home plate on third baseman Aubrie Eckert's error. Brittany Perez hit a ground ball to Indiana Wesleyan pitcher Carlie Weaver, who threw to third to retire one runner. Smith scored from first when Eckert threw high trying to throw out Perez at first.
The Stars scored two runs in the seventh to reach extra innings. Perez stole home performing a double steal with Laci Joyner. Joyner came home on Montana Price's groundout, knotting the score 7-7.
Kennedy Jackson smacked a two-run base hit to center field to level the score 5-5 with two out in the sixth. Indiana Wesleyan responded with Kira Madl's RBI triple and Alex Springer's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth.
Bailey Whitmore pounded a run-scoring double to left-center field to give OCU a 3-0 first-inning advantage. Julianne Abeloe swiped home on a double steal with Smith, who reached on an RBI single.
Lauren Buckley's infield single put Indiana Wesleyan ahead 5-3 in the fourth.
Whitmore, a junior from Oklahoma City, posted a 3-for-4 performance with an RBI, and Smith, a junior from Godley, Texas, went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, an RBI and a steal. Abeloe, a junior from Santa Paula, Calif., had a 3-for-5 day, three stolen bases and a run scored.
Jaden Shores snagged the victory, moving to 15-2 on the season. Shores, a sophomore from Blanchard, Okla., struck out four in 6.2 innings after taking over for Abby Meador.
