Stars upend No. 1-rated Georgia Gwinnett 7-2

Second-ranked OCU moves on to matchup with eighth-ranked Southern Oregon on Wednesday

CLERMONT, Fla. – Oklahoma City University prevailed over top-ranked Georgia Gwinnett 7-2 on Tuesday in a battle of No. 1 vs. No. 2 at Legends Way Ballpark in the NAIA Softball World Series.
Jaci Smith provided OCU with the winning RBI on a second-inning base hit. The No. 2-ranked Stars (53-8) face eighth-ranked Southern Oregon (50-14) on Wednesday.
With a win in the early game, Oklahoma City would play again following the contest. Inclement weather intervened Tuesday, pushing the Columbia (Mo.)-USAO game to 7 p.m. CDT (8 p.m. EDT) Wednesday and the day's games back. The remainder of the games that were on Wednesday's schedule are to be played weather permitting.
Smith socked a single to center field to put the Stars ahead 3-1 with two out in the top of the second. Niki Cook cut Georgia Gwinnett's deficit to 3-2 with a bunt hit to the third-base side of the infield in fourth.
In the top of the seventh, Brittany Perez nailed a triple that carried to the right-field fence with the bases full to increase OCU's advantage to 6-2. Bailey Whitmore brought home Perez on a groundout.
Laci Joyner staked the Stars to a first-inning 2-0 lead by lining a two-run single to right-center with two out. Joyner made a diving stop and made the throw from on her knees to get Elyssa Melton to clinch the outcome.
Perez, a junior from Ventura, Calif., had a 2-for-3 day with three RBIs, and Smith, a junior from Godley, Texas, added a 2-for-4 game with a run scored and an RBI. Joyner, a senior from Mustang, Okla., drove in two runs.

Jaden Shores escaped bases-loaded jams in the second and the fifth. RaeQuinn Rossetti singled with two out in the second, but Aubree Cox was called out for colliding with OCU shortstop Kennedy Jackson on the play. In the fifth, Montana Price caught Cox's fly ball in right-center to retire the side.
Shores, a sophomore from Blanchard, Okla., improved to 16-2 on the year. Shores registered 127 pitches in her 10th complete game of 2018. She struck out four while permitting two runs on six hits and six walks.
