Columbia stymies Stars 6-4

Second-ranked OCU faces Indiana Wesleyan at 9 a.m. CDT Monday

CLERMONT, Fla. – Oklahoma City University fell short to Columbia (Mo.) 6-4 on Saturday at Legends Way Ballpark in the NAIA Softball World Series.
Columbia halted Oklahoma City's nine-game winning streak in the World Series. Second-ranked OCU (51-8) squares off with seventh-ranked Indiana Wesleyan at 9 a.m. CDT (10 a.m. EDT) Monday.
The Stars, winners of the last two national titles, suffered their first loss in World Series play since Saint Xavier (Ill.) dealt OCU a 1-0 setback on May 30, 2016. Oklahoma City holds the mark for consecutive wins in the NAIA Softball World Series with 14 during OCU's 1995 and '96 title runs and 2001 and '02 championship seasons.
In the seventh inning, Kennedy Jackson stole second base to put the tying run in scoring position and runners on second and third for the Stars with two out. OCU's Jaci Smith launched a fly ball deep into right field that Natalie Dummitt caught at the warning track to finish the game.
Mackenzie Martinelli scored on Columbia shortstop Molly Carter's error to cut OCU's deficit to 6-4 with one out. Montana Price dropped a base hit into left field to drive in the Stars' first run in the seventh. Baileigh Loux also scored on a wild pitch in the inning.
Smith knocked in OCU's first run of the game with a two-out base hit to left in the sixth.
Columbia plated four runs in the fifth. Dummitt put Columbia ahead 6-0 on a run-scoring single to right.
Price, a freshman from Bethel, Okla., went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Abby Meador, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., was 1-for-2 with a run scored for OCU. Loux, a freshman from Reno, Nev., had a 1-for-3 day with a double, and Laci Joyner, a senior from Mustang, Okla., turned in a 1-for-3 performance and scored a run.
Meador took the loss for OCU, going to 15-2. Meador entered the contest with wins in her last nine starts and three consecutive shutouts. She led the NAIA in earned run average, fewest runs allowed, least hits allowed and opponents' batting average at the start of the day. Jaden Shores pitched 1.2 shutout innings with two strikeouts.
Lexi Dickerson (14-3) picked up the win, while Kaitlyn Nottelmann earned her first save by getting the last two outs for Columbia. Columbia stopped OCU's nine-game winning streak. The Stars had won seven in a row this postseason.
