Stars outlast Grand View 3-0 to reach World Series

Second-ranked OCU seeks its 11th national title

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University collected a 3-0 victory over Grand View (Iowa) on Wednesday at Ann Lacy Stadium in the NAIA Softball Championship Opening Round Oklahoma City Bracket.
Second-ranked Oklahoma City (51-7) notched its 31st NAIA Softball World Series berth with the triumph. Abby Meador posted her third shutout of the tournament for the Stars.
The Stars will play in the World Series on May 25-31 at Legends Way Ball Fields in Clermont, Fla. OCU owns national championships won in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2007, 2016 and 2017.
Bailey Whitmore pounded an RBI double, while Baileigh Loux tacked on a run-scoring triple in the sixth inning to account for OCU's scoring.
Meador equaled the NAIA Softball Championship Opening Round tournament record with three whitewashes. Meador broke the Opening Round tournament mark for scoreless innings (21). Meador, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., racked up 28 strikeouts and 327 pitches in 21 innings while allowing seven hits in three games.
On Wednesday, Meador fanned nine, blanking 16th-ranked Grand View on five hits and two walks. Meador improved to 15-1 with her 13th complete game and 12th shutout this season. She registered 118 pitches. Meador turned in her 53rd complete game and 34th shutout of her OCU career.
Meador outlasted Claudia Ferrell in a matchup of two of the premier hurlers in the NAIA. Ferrell (29-5) maintained a shutout until the sixth inning.
The Stars struck for three runs in the top of the sixth. Whitmore nailed a drive that carried to the left-center field wall to allow Brittany Perez to score from first base. Perez started off the inning by walking.
With one out, Loux crushed a shot deep off the left-field wall to knock in Sha Ingram, who ran for Whitmore, from second. Loux reached third base on the play, then scored herself as Miranda Nash's relay throw from left field went wild.
Loux, a freshman from Reno, Nev., went 2-for-3 with a double. Loux finished second in the tournament with a .444 batting average (4-for-9) and drove in three runs. In the postseason, Loux is hitting .571 (12-for-21) with seven runs scored and six RBIs.
Kennedy Jackson, a freshman from Moore, Okla., posted a 3-for-4 performance and a stolen base, and Julianne Abeloe, a junior from Santa Paula, Calif., was 1-for-3 for OCU. Meador and Jaci Smith accounted for the Stars' other hits.
