OCU scrapes past Grand View 3-0

Stars meet Grand View at 11 a.m. Wednesday with World Series bid at stake

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University pulled out a 3-0 victory over Grand View (Iowa) on Tuesday at Ann Lacy Stadium in the NAIA Softball Championship Opening Round Oklahoma City Bracket.
Oklahoma City (50-7) produced its 22nd 50-win season in program history. The second-ranked Stars take on 16th-ranked Grand View in the tournament title game 11 a.m. Wednesday.
OCU could secure its 31st NAIA Softball World Series appearance with one victory Wednesday. The Stars reached 50 wins for the sixth consecutive year and 21st time in 31 years under coach Phil McSpadden, college softball's all-time leader in wins vs. four-year competition.
Baileigh Loux knocked in two of OCU's runs, while Abby Meador fired a one-hit shutout for the second day in a row.
In the fifth inning, Brittany Perez scored the Stars' first run when Loux grounded into an infield single to the shortstop Lauren Poortinga with two out. Perez reached home plate from second base on the play. Perez led off the inning with a base hit through the middle of the infield.
With two out in the seventh, Loux socked a base hit to right field to drive in Sha Ingram from second. Laci Joyner advanced to third on the single, then scored on the relay throw.
Loux, a freshman from Reno, Nev., had a 2-for-3 day with two RBIs, while Bailey Whitmore, a junior from Oklahoma City, went 1-for-2. Joyner, a senior from Mustang, Okla., and Perez, a junior from Ventura, Calif., each turned in a 1-for-3 performance with a run scored.
Meador held Grand View without a hit through 4.1 innings. Kaylee Watson had Grand View's lone hit with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Meador retired the last eight Grand View hitters in order.
Meador, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., struck out seven in the complete-game performance. Meador's record moved to 14-1 on the year.
Claudia Farrell held OCU to one hit through four innings. Farrell dropped to 29-4 on the season. Farrell entered the game with wins in 11 of her last 12 starts.
