OKLAHOMA CITY – Phil McSpadden owns 1,651 career wins after Oklahoma City University blanked Bacone 6-0 and 9-0 on Friday afternoon at Ann Lacy Stadium.
McSpadden, college softball's all-time leader in wins vs. four-year schools, has led Oklahoma City to a 1,651-372 record and 10 national championships in his 31st year as a head coach. OCU, ranked fifth in NAIA softball, moved to 38-5, 23-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
McSpadden directed the Stars to their second consecutive national crown 4-1 over Corban (Ore.) on June 1, 2017 in Clermont, Fla. OCU boasts of national championships won in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2007, 2016 and 2017 under McSpadden. McSpadden scooped up his 1,600th career win 7-1 over USAO on April 25, 2017 in Chickasha, Okla. McSpadden has been inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Oklahoma Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the OCU Athletics Hall of Fame.
The Stars held Bacone to two hits in the doubleheader. OCU have recorded eight shutouts in a row and nine whitewashes in 10 contests. The Stars ran its win streak to 22.
Georgia Wall notched her fifth career no-hitter and second of the season. Wall, a junior from Marlow, Okla., remained perfect through 3.2 innings until Emily Davidson reached on an error in the fourth inning. Wall (16-3) struck out 10 in seven innings without a walk.
Wall improved her scoreless innings streak to 47 innings through nine contests. Wall collected the victory in her 11th consecutive start while posting her eighth whitewash in a row. Wall last permitted a run in the fourth inning against Mid-America Christian on March 15 at Ann Lacy Stadium.
Julianne Abeloe touched off a four-run third inning by driving in OCU's first run of the day with a double into right field. Abeloe reached home plate on Jaci Smith's base hit to left.
Abby Meador gave the Stars a 5-0 fourth-inning lead by smacking an RBI double to left. Bailey Whitmore added a run-scoring single to right-center in the fifth.
Smith, a junior from Godley, Texas, went 2-for-3, scored twice, doubled, stole a base and drove in a run.  Meador, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., was 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Whitmore, a junior from Oklahoma City, had a 2-for-4 game with a run batted in.
In the second game, Jaden Shores picked up a two-hit shutout. She carried a no-hitter until one out in the fourth when Davidson doubled along the right-field foul line. Brianna Perez had a single in the fifth for Bacone's other hit of the day.
Shores, a sophomore from Blanchard, Okla., had five strikeouts with one walk in five innings. Shores moved to 10-1 on the year.
Smith provided Shores with run support by pounding a two-run home run over the right center-field wall in the first. Laci Joyner put OCU on top 3-0 with a hit to left.
The Stars tacked on three runs each in the second and the fourth. Smith racked up an RBI single, and Brittany Perez nailed a run-scoring double to right.
OCU scored in the fourth off Abeloe's infield hit, Perez's double and Whitmore's base hit.
Perez, a junior from Ventura, Calif., put together a 3-for-3 performance with two RBIs, while Smith went 2-for-3, scored two runs and knocked in three. Abeloe, a junior from Santa Paula, Calif., was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a steal and an RBI, and Joyner, a senior from Mustang, Okla., went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Kennedy Jackson, a freshman from Moore, Okla., chipped in a 2-for-4 game with a run scored.
Oklahoma City meets Texas Wesleyan in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday in Fort Worth, Texas.
