Stars open SAC play with pair of wins

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University captured a pair of wins in its Sooner Athletic Conference opener against Oklahoma Panhandle State 7-1 and 8-0 on Thursday night at Ann Lacy Stadium.
Kennedy Jackson, a freshman from Moore, Okla., led the Stars with four total hits and three total runs scored in the doubleheader. OCU, ranked No. 1 in NAIA softball, improved to 12-3 overall and 2-0 in the SAC.
Panhandle State fell to 10-11 on the year and 3-3 in conference play in its first softball games vs. Oklahoma City as league foes.
Baileigh Loux and Bailey Whitmore finished the day with three hits apiece for Oklahoma City. Loux, a freshman from Reno, Nev., notched two hits in the first game and smacked a double in the second game. Whitmore, a junior from Oklahoma City, picked up two hits and three RBIs in game two.
The Stars got on the scoreboard first in game one, when Julianne Abeloe laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored Mackenzie Martinelli in the bottom of the third. Jaci Smith later singled to left field to bring in Jackson and give OCU a 2-0 lead.
Oklahoma City added another run in the fourth to go ahead 3-0, then exploded for four runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Stars scratched across the first run of the inning off an error from Panhandle State, then scored again off a wild pitch. Whitmore followed with a single that drove in two runs and put OCU ahead 7-0.
Panhandle State scored one run in the top of the seventh but was unable to cut any further into the OCU lead. Georgia Wall, a junior from Marlow, Okla., earned her fifth win of the season for the Stars after pitching seven innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out six.
OCU took a 5-0 lead in game two after a four-run third inning. Whitmore led with a double to center field that drove in two runs. Laci Joyner then smashed a double down the left-field line that drove in Kayla Gallagher. Abby Meador capped the inning with a single to right field that drove in Joyner.
The Stars pushed across three more runs in the bottom of the fifth and ended the game early due to the eight-run rule. Brittany Perez knocked a single up the middle that brought home two runs and Smith later singled to drive in OCU's eighth run of the game.
Meador, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., threw five shutout innings and allowed only one hit while striking out seven Panhandle State batters.
Oklahoma City returns to action at 2 p.m. Saturday for a doubleheader against USAO in Chickasha, Okla.
