West Texas A&M deals OCU pair of setbacks

Smith collects four hits Tuesday

CANYON, Texas – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University dropped a twin bill to West Texas A&M 9-5 and 5-2 on Tuesday at Schaeffer Park in a clash of highly ranked softball teams.
West Texas A&M, ranked ninth in NCAA Division II, became the first team to take both ends of a doubleheader from the Stars since Oklahoma Baptist won 5-0 and 4-3 on April 15, 2014 in Shawnee, Okla. OCU, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, fell to 10-3 on the year.
West Texas A&M (15-3) has given Oklahoma City three of its four losses since the beginning of last season, when OCU went 68-1.
In the first game, the Stars held a 3-0 lead in the fourth. Montana Price knocked in a run by bouncing a single through the middle of the infield. Baileigh Loux scored on the play, but Bailey Whitmore was thrown out at the plate. Mackenzie Martinelli followed with a two-run single to left field with two out.
West Texas answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth, Suka Van Gurp hit a three-run home run to put the Lady Buffs on top 5-3.
In the seventh, Julianne Abeloe nailed a triple along the first-base foul line to bring home Kennedy Jackson. Abeloe reached home plate on a wild pitch for the final margin.
Abeloe, a junior from Santa Paula, Calif., had a 2-for-4 game with a run scored and a run driven in. Jaci Smith, a junior from Godley, Texas, went 2-for-4. Georgia Wall took the loss, going to 4-2.
In game No. 2, Smith pounded a double into center field to drive home Jackson and put OCU up 1-0 in the first. West Texas A&M responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Abeloe hit a run-scoring base hit along the right-field foul line to cut OCU's deficit to 5-2 in the seventh.
Smith went 2-for-3 and drove in a run, while Abeloe was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Jaden Shores was saddled with the loss to drop to 3-1 this year.
The Stars open Sooner Athletic Conference play against Panhandle State in a 5 p.m. doubleheader Thursday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
