SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Wayland Baptist (Texas) eliminated Oklahoma City University from the Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament 78-75 on Friday at Bill George Arena.
Ridell Camidge and William Robinson each posted 14 points for OCU (23-8). The ninth-ranked Stars will look to gain an at-large berth when the NAIA Division I Tournament pairings get released March 7.
Wayland Baptist (23-8) faces 24th-ranked Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) (23-9) at 4 p.m. Saturday for the tournament championship and a national-tournament bid.
Oklahoma City cut its deficit to one point twice in the final 13 seconds of the game. Samuel Williams connected on a trey to slice OCU's deficit to 74-73 with 13 seconds left, and Camidge buried free throws to reduce Wayland Baptist's lead to 76-75 with nine seconds showing.
Trevonta Robertson and Ruben Lopez each downed a free throw in the last seven seconds to keep Wayland Baptist in front.
Camidge's jumper widened OCU's lead to 53-43 with 15:14 left in the second half. Wayland Baptist answered with the game's next six points. J.J. Culver's transition jump shot sliced his team's deficit to 53-49 at the 12:53 mark.
Culver scored on a jumper to tie the game 61-61 with 8:56 left. Lopez nailed a 3 to give the Pioneers the lead. Wayland Baptist led the final 8:11 of the game.
Camidge hit all four of his free-throw tries. Robinson, a junior from Chicago, scored his season-high point output in 10 minutes of playing time. Robinson shot 4-for-6 from the field and at the free-throw line.
Terence Bonhomme, a senior from St. Martinville, La., added 11 points.
