OCU pounds SAGU 14-1, 4-1

Six Stars finish doubleheader with three or more hits

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University picked up a pair of wins over Sooner Athletic Conference opponent Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) on Monday afternoon 14-1 and 4-1 at SAGU Field.
Kennedy Jackson, a freshman from Moore, Okla., led the Stars with five total hits and three runs on Monday. OCU, ranked No. 1 in NAIA softball, improved to 15-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play while SAGU dropped to 13-9-1 on the season and 4-2 in the SAC.
Eight different Stars ended the doubleheader with at least two hits, including six players with at least three hits on the day. Jaci Smith, a junior from Godley, Texas, added four hits, three runs and two RBIs against the Lady Lions.
Oklahoma City trailed 1-0 heading to the top of the third inning in game one, then rattled home six runs to take a commanding lead. Julianne Abeloe brought in OCU's first run of the day on a sacrifice fly to left field, then Baileigh Loux and Brittany Perez followed with RBIs. Laci Joyner was hit by pitch to bring in another OCU run then Bailey Whitmore belted a single to left that drove in Perez and Loux.
The Stars pulled away in the top of the fourth after scratching across eight runs. The inning was highlighted by a three-run homer from Perez, her second of the season. Perez, a junior from Ventura, Calif., ended the day with three total hits, including a homerun and double.
Georgia Wall, a junior from Marlow, Okla., picked up her sixth win of the season after allowing five hits and one run while striking out six in five innings of work.
In game two, OCU and SAGU were knotted at one run apiece heading into the top of the sixth inning. A double from Perez broke the tie and gave the Stars a 3-1 lead. Whitmore followed with a double to center field, scoring Perez. The Lady Lions were unable to tally any more runs in the final two innings.
Jaden Shores, a sophomore from Blanchard, Okla., threw five innings and allowed three hits and one run while striking out eight to earn her fourth win of the year. Abby Meador, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., struck out four in two innings of relief to notch her second save of the season. Meador also finished with three hits for the Stars.
Oklahoma City returns to action at 2 p.m. Tuesday for a doubleheader against No. 24 Houston-Victoria in Farmers Branch, Texas.
