Wayland Baptist topples OCU 13-12

Stars clout season-high five home runs

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Wayland Baptist (Texas) picked up the 13-12 win over Oklahoma City University in a seesaw affair Saturday at Wilder Field in a clash of rated NAIA baseball teams.
Austin Moya provided the Pioneers with the winning run on an infield single as 12th-ranked Wayland Baptist notched three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Fourth-ranked OCU went to 17-3, 6-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Paxton Covel had an RBI single, while Jared Rodriguez added a sacrifice fly to tie the game 12-12 for Wayland Baptist. The lead changed hands for the fourth time in the game on Moya's single.
Shaun Corso hammered a three-run home run to left to supply the Stars a 10-8 eighth-inning lead. Garrett Foster nailed a solo shot over the left-field wall for an 11-8 OCU advantage. Branden Grieger knocked in a run on a base hit to left for a 12-10 ninth-inning Stars edge.
Oklahoma City hit a season-best five homers. Elliott Cary pounded a two-run blast to tie the game 3-3 in the fourth. Grieger sent a 1-0 pitch over the right-field wall to put OCU on top 4-3 in the fifth.
After Wayland Baptist tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, Quinton Walbergh answered with a homer to center. The Stars led 7-4 on Jacob Chappell's run-scoring single to left.
OCU piled up 15 hits or more for the seventh time this season. Cary, a junior from Niceville, Fla., turned in a 3-for-5 day, scored twice and drove in two runs, and Walbergh, a junior from Edmond, Okla., went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Grieger, a senior from Simi Valley, Calif., was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs, and Foster, a senior from Ardmore, Okla., had a 2-for-4 performance.
Tyler Milligan absorbed the loss for the Stars. J.R. Holloway struck out six in 3.1 innings for OCU.
The Stars face Central Christian (Kan.) at 6 p.m. Monday in McPherson, Kan., to complete the two teams' three-game set this season. The contest was rained out earlier in the year in Oklahoma City.
