Bellevue knocks off OCU 6-4

Stars suffer first loss of season

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University baseball suffered its first loss of the 2018 campaign, falling to ninth-ranked Bellevue (Neb.) 6-4 Friday afternoon at Jim Wade Stadium.
Lane Milligan, a senior from Binger, Okla., led the Stars with a 2-for-4 day at the plate with one run scored and three RBIs. The loss dropped Oklahoma City, ranked third in NAIA, to 5-1 overall. Bellevue improved to 1-1 on the season.
The Bruins got on the board first, as their leadoff hitter knocked a single to center field and the following batter doubled to bring in the run. Bellevue later got a two-run homer that gave the Bruins a three-run advantage after one inning of play.
OCU responded in the bottom of the second when a double from Jacob Chappell advanced Elliott Cary to third, then Cary scored off a sacrifice fly from Caleb Davis. Up next was Milligan, who singled up the middle to bring in Chappell and cut the Bellevue lead to one.
Bellevue scratched across two more runs in the top of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. Craig Knoche, a senior from Tempe, Ariz., finished his day for the Stars with 4.0 innings pitched, gave up six hits, five runs and struck out six batters. Friday was Knoche's first loss on the mound this year.
Oklahoma City again battled back and was able to cut into the Bruins' lead. The Stars had a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth, getting two runs across when Milligan belted a two-run homer that scored Davis. OCU was later caught stealing and trailed 5-4 heading to the top of the fifth.
Kolin Marley entered in relief of Knoche in the fifth and sixth innings, giving up one run in the top of the sixth. The Stars called on Miguel Figueroa to finish the game. Figueroa, a junior from Tucson, Ariz., gave up two hits and no runs in 2.0 innings of work.
The Stars made one final push in the bottom of the seventh inning when Shaun Corso hit a two-out single to center field. Corso, a senior from Lancaster, Pa., finished Friday 2-of-4. OCU was unable to capitalize however and ended the game with a strike out.
OCU returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday for a double-header against Texas College at Jim Wade Stadium.
