OCU trounces Mount Mercy 16-8

Six different Stars notch multi-hit performances in Friday’s win

OKLAHOMA CITY – Six different Stars recorded two or more hits and Oklahoma City University rolled to a 16-8 victory over Mount Mercy (Iowa) Friday afternoon at Jim Wade Stadium.
Shaun Corso, a senior from Lancaster, Pa., led OCU with four hits, four RBIs and four runs. The Stars, ranked third in the NAIA, improved to 6-1 on the season while Mount Mercy fell to 1-4 overall. J.R. Holloway picked up his first win of the year for Oklahoma City, striking out two and allowing two hits in 1.1 innings of work.
The Stars took the lead in the bottom of the first when Elliott Cary was drove in by Joe Lytle. Mount Mercy answered in the second, loading the bases with no outs and scratched across two runs to take the lead. Blaze Hastings ended the inning with a strikeout to prevent any further damage. Hastings, a senior from Guthrie, Okla., finished with nine strikeouts in 6.0 innings for OCU.
Cary walked, then stole second and then third to start the third inning. Lytle later doubled down the left-field line and brought home the tying run. Branden Grieger drove in another run in the inning with a knock down the left-field line. Grieger and Lytle each finished with two hits and at least two RBIs on the day.
Quinton Walbergh had a sac-fly that ended up scoring Corso, then Grieger scored before Daniel Costello was chased down trying to steal. The Stars held a 5-2 lead after three innings.
Corso blasted his second homerun of the season in the fifth and extended OCU's lead to four runs after five innings. The Mustangs again fought back, tallying two runs in both the top of the sixth and seventh to tie the game heading to the bottom of the seventh.
Back-to-back triples from Lane Milligan and Lytle sparked the Stars on offense and were the start of a four-run inning. Corso singled and later advanced on a passed ball, then Caleb Davis singled and Walbergh later doubled to each bring in a run.
Mount Mercy was able to get two more runs in the top of the eighth to cut the deficit to two runs, but OCU had another offensive explosion in the bottom half of the inning to put the game away. The Stars notched six runs, highlighted by a doubles from Corso and Walbergh. Hunter Aguirre and Grieger each had RBI singles.
Miguel Figueroa closed the game for OCU, allowing no hits in 1.2 innings of work and struck out two. Oklahoma City's pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts and five hits in the win.
The Stars return to action on Saturday for a two-game stretch against Mount Mercy (Iowa) at 10 a.m. and against Hastings (Neb.) at 3 p.m.
