OCU knocks off Mid-America Christian 85-73

Stars outscore opponent 21-8 in third quarter

OKLAHOMA CITY – Daniela Galindo dropped a team-high 28 points and led Oklahoma City University to an 85-73 victory over Mid-America Christian Saturday afternoon at Abe Lemons Arena.
Galindo, a senior from Shattuck, Okla., had 24 of her 28 points in the first half of Saturday's contest and has scored 20 or more points in four of her last five games. The Stars, ranked fourth in NAIA women's basketball, improved to 19-4 on the year and 12-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Mid-America Christian fell to 15-7 overall and 9-5 in SAC play.
Oklahoma City came out strong defensively against the Evangels, turning seven MACU turnovers into 10 points in the first quarter and jumping to a 22-18 lead with 1:02 left after Sydney Webb buried a trey. The Stars were unable to create much separation in the second period, despite Galindo ending the first half with four 3-pointers. OCU trailed Mid-American 42-41 at the break.
The Stars got seven points from Taylor LaCour in the third period and rallied on an 8-2 run to build their lead to seven with just over three minutes remaining. LaCour, a junior from Georgetown, Texas, finished the game with 13 points and three assists. OCU went on to outscore MACU 21-8 in the third and led by a dozen heading into the fourth.
Brooke Irwin gave the Evangels' defense problems all night and continued to score buckets in the paint in the fourth quarter. The Stars ended up outscoring Mid-America Christian 38-28 in points in the paint and skyrocketed their lead to 17 points in the fourth off a layup from Irwin. She finished the day with 12 points, four rebounds and two blocks.
The Evangels made on final push toward the end of the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late. Oklahoma City finished the game shooting 52.5 percent from the field and held MACU to 40.6 percent shooting. The Stars also led in second chance points (11-5), fast break points (8-5) and rebounds (37-34).
NaShyla Hammons, a sophomore from Oklahoma City, finished with nine points, eight rebounds and three assists for OCU. Webb, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., produced eight points, three assists and two steals.
Oklahoma City returns to action at 6 p.m. Thursday at Oklahoma Panhandle State in Goodwell, Okla.
